Trying My Darnest!!

Recommended Posts

Hi all, okay. Started eating small again as of this past sunday 1/15/2011. As of today have lost 6.5. YEAH for me. But, I am starving. Today I had oatmeal and coffee (lots), lunch i had 1 slice of cajun turkey 1 pickle, banana pepper, 10 olives and poured a little ranch over it.was satisfied. at 4:30 i was starving, so went to starbucks got their ($4.24) chocolate banana Protein smoothie. hit the spot. tonight i ate talipia, about 2 tbsp of homemade kraut. 1 tsp of banana peppers, 1 pickle with ranch over the fish. i am full and satisfied. I am gonna give this my best again. when u are self pay and it cost $120.00 to get a fill that is needed then i guess i am gonna try this on my own. wish me luck.

Whoa buddy, watch out for those starbucks drinks! They hit your calorie count as hard as your wallet. I'd say cancel the liquid calories all together, especially if you know you need a fill but can't get one as yet. Save up that four bucks a day and in a month or so you can get the fill you need. Your other food choices look fine, but you're a bit low on the fruits and veggies. Try to sneak a few in and chew them well, they go a long way in satisfying hunger with the band. Apples are a great treat. I can never eat a whole one though.

Great job on losing 6.5 lbs! you are on your way! Good luck on "dieting" on your own. I hope you can get a fill soon! Try the South Beach Diet, it does well with controlling hunger and it is very band-friendly.

It's a long road ahead, just keep plugging away!

I would definitely dont do starbucks and maybe have Protein in the morning instead of oatmeal its so many carbs to start off your day. Have some eggs or a shake it would be better.

I have oatmeal every morning. Steelcut oats is low glycemic, holds you a long time and has Protein in it. The brand I use (Bob's Red Mill) has 7 grams of Protein. Not a huge amount, but enough. I add chopped apples to mine and also eat a turkey sausage link. However, if you're getting hungrier sooner after Breakfast than you'd like, try something else.

If you're using a sugary instant oatmeal type, try switching over to steelcut. It can be made overnight in a crockpot so it's easy to have ready first thing in the morning.

I thought whoa Nelly on the Starbucks smoothie too, but looked it up and while it's hefty in calories (http://news.starbucks.com/news/starbucks+vivanno+smoothies+fact+sheet.htm), it's not the worst choice in the world. I'd have it made with skim milk.. or even better make my own at home and bring it in a thermos. I like the idea of having something from home and putting the $4.00 in a kitty to save up for a fill.

You're doing pretty well, a little more forethought and planning ahead will help you do even better! Maybe take an apple and some string cheese with you to work for those late afternoon hungries?

Keep on posting, we want to know how you're doing.

I am gonna give this my best again. when u are self pay and it cost $120.00 to get a fill that is needed then i guess i am gonna try this on my own. wish me luck.

Just curious but if you're going to try it on your own and not use the band at all...why get it in the first place? As a self-pay, you've just spent thousands of dollars on getting the band. So by not getting fills, it's a bit like buying a car and then refusing to put gas in it, no? :)

My doctor put 3cc in on the first fill, 2cc on the next and then went up by 1cc fills. If I had know that I was looking for cessation of hunger and not physical restriction, I would have stopped at 6cc...only 3 fills. Well worth the money to get rid of the hunger.

If you're one of the fortunate ones, the band alone will give you enough pressure on the vagus nerves to eliminate hunger (except normal hunger right before a meal)...assuming you're eating a reasonable meal. So pay attention to your hunger level...and whether you're eating enough.

I'm back to my Protein shake (with half a banana and a Tbs peanut butter) for Breakfast. For lunch and dinner I eat 3 oz of Protein, 1/2 cup vegies and (maybe) 1/4 cup starch. I'm not hungry for 4 hours after a meal so I know I'm at my sweet spot.

As others said, I'd watch those Starbucks smoothies. Most of them contain sugar in some form...and sugar can set you to craving more sugar.

Oh, and congrats on the weight loss!

Your weight loss is great! I agree with other posters that Starbucks is 1) expensive, 2) you can make your own shake with more Protein less suger. If you can't make a shake a work; you could buy a ready to drink Protein which still would be cheaper. Premier RTD at costco is like $1.39 per container.

Also a little concerned about the olives, they have good fat but are very high in salt.

Okay today was one of them days. Our son was moving and decided today was the day. I only had coffee that was it. 2 glasses of Water until: YES: Starbucks. Sorry but no food, in a hurry, did not want drive thru so again had a smoothie. It held me over until supper. I had Captain D's (baked talapia with rice). Had 1/2 of the fish down had about 2 bites of rice and the rice got stuck. So yes I had to excuse myself to the potty. Went sat back down and ate almost all of the other 1/2 of fish. I know today was bad, bad. Cannot live like this. But I # 1 was not hungry today. # 2 I did weight and I am down 9 lbs. 240. Yes this is wonderful. Tomorrow is another day and I am def. going to have the right foods. Today was hard. Thanks for all the support. Yes I Can Do This in 2011.

Please eat your oatmeal!!!!!!!!!!!! I eat it all the time and I am still managing to lose weight! Plus, if you go workout within an hour of eating oatmeal it will give you a great energy boost! At least it works for me! Eating Protein along with the carb boosts your weight loss as well. So, you did good by eating an egg along with the oatmeal. :)

For breakfast I have Chobani Greek yoghurt (fat free with fruit), half a scoop of vanilla whey isolate powder, spendra to taste, 10 g of kashi go lean high Protein for some crunch. This is about 25 g of protein for about 220 calories. I would consider keeping a Ready to Drink Protein in your car for emergencies it will save you money and let you have a lower calorie high protein option when you're busy.

I've been told that Slim-Fast has too much sugar, but seriously I have not read the labels.

I use Syntrax Nectar for my post-workout drinks. It's 90 calories, 0 sugar, 0 carbs and 23 grams of protein. It comes in lots of different fruit flavors and some richer, more desserty flavors too. I mix it with something flavorful.. like Powerade zero or coffee or whatever seems appropriate.

Just mentioning this in case you want to try something other than slim-fast. :) www.si03.com or www.netrition.com for the Syntrax nectar (make sure you look for the nectar.. they have other stuff that isn't appropriate for our needs).

The egg with oatmeal sounds like a good idea.

I only have my oatmeal in the morning. And it is the maple and brown sugar. I know I know, but as we all know this is a life journey not a diet. So I am doing what works for me. I am just overjoyed at being down 12. 5 lbs in less than a month.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
