Excercising after the band

Recommended Posts

Just curious as to what and how you started excersising after surgery? I'm about 7 weeks out and have gotten my energy back, and now I want to be mobile. I just don't know where to start. I have 3 small kiddos and live on a semi-busy street and don't own a treadmill. I don't really have the $90 a month for a gym membership.... I haven't really worked out in 3 or 4 years, so I am waaaaay out of shape. I would love to try the P90X system at some point, I just don't think I could keep up with it at this time. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated!

usually a school track is available for casual walkers. I did that for a while. It's amazing how rapidly our bodies will adapt and want us to give it more laps/longer time on the track.

And finding walking routes in local parks is also free. Some areas have hiking trails available.

Kids all seem to like little outings.

cheers on your journey

I can drive 20 mins to a park in town... but we're in the midst of a "winter storm" down here. Today's high is 31 (and we have damp air down south... so 31 is FREEZING! lol) I didn't know if there were some good workout dvds for bigger people just getting back into excercise. I also have scoliosis, so floor workouts are pretty painful. I remember in high school it didn't hurt all that bad, but I was about 80lbs lighter in high school! Thank u for your suggestions! :)

p90x is AWESOME. I've done it twice now and I feel great afterwards. I can't do all of it, but I do what I can and I'm improving every time I do it.

Wii has just dance that is great to help you get started. Also, you might want to invest in a a starter band kit to start stretching and toning. There are also some free exercise videos on the internet that you might want to view and try. Good Luck!

I started going to zumba 2 nights a week 3 weeks after surgery. I just recently joined the gym because it actually ended up being cheaper and they offer free zumba classes there. I was paying $5 a class (40 a month) and the regular gym membership was 50 but through my health insurance we got a discount and I pay 24.99 monthly plus 10 a month for daycare so I don't have to worry about babysitter or weather. You might see if your health insurance or your employer offers discounts to the gym. Once I drop some weight I really want to try the p90x too but right now zumba and treadmill are all I can handle but I know 3 months ago I couldn't have done either so I am happy with the progress so far.

Good luck and I hope you figure something out.. I have never been to a gym until recently and I love the way I feel when I am done. It's so nice to have some energy back!!

I started out walking the block, and when weather was bad, walking the mall. I now jog 3 miles a day.

Start out doing exercise that cost you nothing and once you build your habit, look for some used equipment. Craigslist, yard sales and the local salvation army is full of old exercise equipment people bought thinking they would develop the habit of exercising once the purchased something.

And since you have small children, you might want to think about your local YMCA. Their family plans are prorated for income (or use to be). Letting your kids swim or have fun while you work out would be a great time them the whole family.

I would love to go to the gym! Just can't afford it right now. I was doing Zumba twice a week, but my oldest just started soccer, and her practices overlap my classes :/

Idk where the Y is around here, or if we even have one... I hadn't thought about it tho, so I will look into that. Thanks :) I like my excercise time to be without the kids, but that's easier said than done.... I guess I just have to learn how to share my workout time with them.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
