Getting banded Friday, 1.7.11 & looking for a buddy

Recommended Posts

I'm super excited that my surgery is this Friday! My surgeon only has me on a two-day, pre-op liquid diet which I started today... I am SO hungry! I'm ready to eat my shoe at this point but nope, it's not liquid, so the shoe will have to wait. I'm sure once I have the surgery, the feeling will change. I live in the Los Angeles area and have struggled with weight my whole life. All my fat is like a monster-truck tire around my mid section.... Boy, I can't wait to see that disappear! I'm 37 yrs old, 5'6, 227 lbs with a goal to lose about 80 lbs.

My husband and friends are very supportive, although there are some that are not as excited. My husband has also been very fit his whole life and when he's "let himself go" it means he has 10-15 lbs to lose, which he does after running a couple miles each day for a couple of weeks. He has no idea how to process my struggles and doesn't understand the emotional turmoil that comes with the weight problems I've had. We have no children and have had difficulty conceiving, so I am hoping that losing weight can help us with that.

With all that being said, I am hoping to find a buddy (or more) to share this experience with and help each other thru the journey. Hope to hear from you! :)

Just remember that you are still going to be hungry after surgery. Once your swelling goes down the hunger will come back that is a misconception that the band will restrict your hunger.

Its hard for me to tell ppl and I dont know why. I am very close to my cousins but everything is a compatition to them, including weight... Im not like that. They wont understand that Im doing it for me and they wont be happy.. I know that sounds aweful, but they arent bad ppl... Ugh I want to be able to tell ppl I just dont want to hear the negativity they might and very possibly may have. Any ways thats me.. Hope to hear from you soon and Good luck

I hope everything went well yesterday! I was banded just 3 days ago but have a lot more weight to lose than you...i had to do 2 weeks of pre-op diet, 2 shakes and a bar every day. The recovery is a bit painful but I can notice a difference each morning that things are improving. I haven`t told anyone but my husband and father, not even my kids know, they think I`m just sick right now. Glad you have support and look forward to hearing how your surgery went.

I hope everything went well! I am being banded on 1.28.11 and cannot wait!

I know what you mean about not wanting to tell a lot of people. Most of the people I've told have been supportive but I've also gotten responses like "You don't seem to have that much weight to lose... you should be able to do that without surgery." Trust me, I've tried it all! I guess it would be hard for some people to understand unless they've struggled with weight loss themselves.

Hopeful7, you really need Protein for your body to repair itself from the surgery so try to get some in. Yesterday I had a Boost drink and a half can of cream of chicken Soup all day and it felt like too much so I know what you mean about not being hungry but the protein and the fluids are essential. Take care :)

Hi Blueberry Girl. Congrats on the new band!!! :)I've been banded for a few months now and still getting used to the things I can and cant eat. The band is a great tool. (I have to keep reminding myself it's a tool) Many people think that WLS is an easy, quick fix.... it's SO not!!! It's still hard work but if you stay motivated you'll have great success! In my first 6 weeks I lost 33 lbs. and I'm fitting into clothes that were hanging in the BACK of the closet (thats where all the stuff that doesnt fit anymore goes) ;)

I'm also in LA. Who was your doc and where'd you get banded?

Hi, I'm Connie. I'm in So. Cal too and getting banded on Wednesday, the 12th. Just 1-1/2 more days. On the liquid pre-op diet and tired of it. Tomorrow all clear liquid and the flush, ugh! I'm dreading that most. I'm excited and getting nervous too.

I've been drinking tea non stop and watered down Soups and broths. I just keep getting painfully bloated. I tried a Protein Shake today for the first time. It grossed me out and took a couple hours, but I got it down. It's too hard to drink much when I'm feeling so puffy. Other than the bloat, I only have some soreness where my port was implanted but I'm ok otherwise. I've been making sure to walk every day but it's just not helping with this gas. Any ideas?

My story is the same as yours. 38 years old. Heavy since a child. 5"4 222. I will be banded on 1/20. Hope your surgery went well and look forward to hearing your experience. I have to do the liquid diet for 10 days. Haven't been that hungry yet. I can eat 1 meal/day. Please let me know how you made out. We too have several people not so excited for the surgery. My husband is very supportive though.

Protein is supposed to help the healing. Do what you can to meet your surgeons recommendations, but do what feel right or your body. You just want to heal so you can start using the tool. I'm doing my best to get some protein in. I tried trader joes protein powde in some v8. All I have to say s NO. It was disgusting and went down the drain. I'm just making sure i Have plenty of fluids and am drinking my Soups and broths at meal times. I'm also hunting for liquid vitamins but I I'm gonn have to buy online.

Hi Blueberry Girl. My dr is Dr. Korman. He is w/ Marina Del Rey Hospital. They are a great bunch!!! :smile2: The nurse that cared for me after surgery could not say enough about getting in ALL my protein!!! I have tried lots and the easiest for me to get down is EAS AdvantEdge Carb Control. They have 3 flavors and I think the chocolate is best.(i get mine @ Walmart cuz they 're cheaper) There is also an unflavored Protein Powder by Pure Protein(GNC) that you can use in anything. I also found Protein Shots.(also Walmart) they have 30 grams of protein in just a 3 oz tube.(thats half of whats recommended daily) :wink2: Protein does help with the healing and helps you you feel better but what really made me start getting in all my protein was that when you go thru weight loss and your body doesnt get enough protein you can start to lose hair. I really didnt think I would be affected in that way because I have always had lots and lots of thick hair. After several weeks I started noticing at shower time when washing my hair I was losing lots of hair. My hair was getting noticeably thinner. That was the fire under my butt!!! :target: Now i try to get in at least 80 grams of protein and it helps me lose better too. I eat lots of chicken breast and fat free refried Beans (w/cheese n tapatio they taste like the ones from Taco Bell)

As you go along you will find what works best for you but DO ALWAYS get all your protein in!!!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
