How to deal with friends?

Recommended Posts

HI......I am looking for some words of wisdom.....

My best friend is also obese. She cannot have WLS for a variety of reasons. She is also more concerned about appearances and fashion etc than I am.

Well.....as I am losing weight, she has been gaining weight. And while she is supportive....she doesn't go out of her way to offer me any encouragement or accolades.

I feel selfish for feeling this way. I know she is unhappy with her ballooning weight......but I guess I would love for my BFF to acknowlegde how well I am doing.....

For her to acknowledge your success would be her having to face her difficulties and shortcomings. I have a similar situation with my sister and didn't even tell her about my surgery until 3 weeks post-op. There are many people that feel that they lose a little bit of themselves when they praise someone else, when really it makes you feel better about yourself when you lift up another person. You just keep doing what you are doing and take pride and satisfaction in the success that you have achieving. Don't let her lack of positive reinforcement discourage you, in fact she may also be fearful that you will lose weight and not want her as a friend anymore. Just be the example of good food choices and health that she needs.

Keep up the good work...I only wish I was losing as well as you!!!!

I think you just have to accept that your not going to get a lot of support from your friend. I am sure she is angry with herself for gaining, and jealous of you for loosing. Look to others for encouragement, maybe family. Like already said, keep doing what your doing and be a good example for your friend. As long as she is not sabotoging you ( that I would discuss with her for sure) I think you should just let things be. Best wishes in your journey, keep up the good work!

I wouldn't worry about it. I don't expect anyone to praise me for losing weight. It's nice when it happens, but it's my own personal journey. I'm sure in the long run you will inspire her :). Yes, as @vip1968 said, as long as she's not sabotaging you. None of my friends have said anything haha, they ask how I'm doing, or questions about how I'm eating, but nobody is like you look great!

I had my lapband surgery last Monday and I am shocked that not one of my two best friends (I thought) have even called me to see how I am doing this week. I don't understand it at all, and I never would have anticipated it. Neither one are obese at all, but I thought they supported my decision, but now I am doubting that.

I am feeling a little sorry for myslef this week..between the liquid diet, getting dehydrated and in the ER for fluids and lack of concern from my friends, I am feeling a little emotional. I will go back to work tomorrow...maybe I need more human contact than my husband and kids!

i have the same situation with my best friend and my Cousin in Law. My best friend is at least trying. but due to a family issue with another member having bariatric surgery with a fatal result she almost refuses to look at this option. Which i completely understand. She said she would come and check on me but she didnt and took over a week for her to even text me about how i was doing. my Cousin in Law has not spoken three words to me since my surgery. i just encourage them in their decisions. But i made this choice for me and me alone. i am the one that has to look at myself in the mirror and be proud for my small goals to becoming a healthier person. now granted i have gotten down on myself but i think everyone goes through that stage. but i am doing this to be healthier and be there for my family without being out of breath or popping pills for pain in my joints because i can not hike or join in the activities my family is doing. no way! not any more. Be proud of what you are accomplishing and be patient with your friends. Love them unconditionally. God bless your decision for being a healthier you and Good luck on your journey.:D

Thanks Beckyrlnd! That is what I keep telling myself...I did this for myself, not anyone else (well, maybe my husband and kids some). While I could understand more easily the lack of support during actual weight loss, during the surgery process was a little hurtful.

You did this surgery for yourself and yourself alone.

It is nice to have your friends praise you and be happy for you but for many reasons it just may not happen.

I have lost 35 lbs so far and only one person has said to me "oh, you've lost weight!!"

That's why I've only told a few people. and I'm actually glad about that because I've gone up and down so many times I'm not really open to answering any questions about my loss.

During this time you're going to be your best friend. So be that and don't further complicate your life by investing to much in how others feel and think and what they say .

If your friend is obese and not able to do anything about it no doubt she's jealous of your progress.

Take this time to focus on you alone and accomplishing your goal. Don't look to others for praise . Make yourself proud and praise yourself.

When I told my best friend (former now) that I was approved for WLS her response what "great now instead of being fat and miserable you'll be skinny and miserable" I decided right then and there that she wasn't the kind of person I needed in my life. As far as I know she is the only miserable one now. Sometimes when you make major changes in your life it makes the people around you examine their own lives. Maybe your friends just took a good look at themselves and didn't like what they saw. Congrats on doing what is right for you and taking the steps to live a healthier life!

My best friend isn't overweight, but she was always trying to get me to follow some fad diet with her (which she never stuck too). I am sure that at work tomorrow she is just going to be like everything is normal...but I think I will play it closer to the vest from now on and keep my ups and downs to myself, my family or my support group (like all of you!).

Jackie my BFF is the same way. She CAN have WLS she just won't, says if she can't do it on her own then it isn't real. Yep, she doesn't support this AT ALL. In fact since I've started this process back in November she's cut her contact with me. She's asked, what I'm assuming is out of politeness, how I'm feeling but never anything supportive. We've been friends since we were 11 and 12 years old we are now 40 and 41, I have a feeling this will end our friendship. I'm discovering she is far to self involved and if it isn't about her then she doesn't want to hear about it.

Sadly there are going to be people in our lives, the ones we thought would be there that will not accept a new "skinny" us. Sad as it may be we are going to have to let them go, we are doing something for ourselves, our health and our families, we can't have others take that away from us.

After reading your post and others, I feel so mad! How can someone begrudge someone else their health? Let's face it, even if you don't have comorbidities now, being obese will eventually give you them! As we age, we can no longer handled the extra weight. Everyday that we are obese we are putting strain on our bodies. WTH!?

For those friends/family/whatever that do not support you in your Quest for a healthy life, forget them! This is hard enough to do that none of us need those people in our lives bringing us down.

Your ticker looks like you are doing a great job and you don't need your friend or anyone else to tell you that! That being said...CONGRATULATIONS and WTG from me!

It could be that 1) she's uncomfortable asking for details (do you ask others specific questions about their medical treatments?), 2) she knows she has a problem but is struggling with feeling inadequate. Personally it took me a long time to consider WLS and when I did I still felt like I was admitting failure.

Honk, you are correct, to a degree. I'm not sure about Jackie, but for me, a simple phone call the day after surgery to see how I'm doing, not a pouty, I wanted to go to lunch for my birthday but since you can't eat I guess I won't get to see you. This is what my BFF said to me the day before my surgery, nothing about if I was nervous or how I was feeling, just OH well since we can't do what I want we won't do anything at all. A person can be supportive with out being intrusive.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
