I start the PreOp diet today!

Recommended Posts

I started my pre op diet today, too!! I'll be banded on Dec 30!

I didn't know what to expect, but it's not so bad. I've been told that the first 3 days are the hardest as your body detox's from the sugars.

We have our family Christmas party at our house on Saturday, so I can relate to your concerns about your birthday. Happy Birthday, you are giving yourself a great gift!

I am doing Optifast for the next two weeks. What is your program?

Good luck, let's keep in touch.....

Thank you Imagine923 and good luck to you as well!

My program is basically just orders from the nutritionist at the surgery center I'm going to. For the first week it's 2 protien shakes (200 calories or less and at least 15g protien) and one meal - 4 oz of a smart protien (chicken, fish, etc) and 1/2 cup of veggies. They gave me choices on frozen meals but I'd prefer to cook myself so I kinda skipped past those. Then the 2nd week is 4 protien shakes. I can supplement both weeks with sugar free Jello, sugar free popsicles, and chicken/beef/veggie broth. Then of course the last day is Clear Liquids only and the night before surgery, nothing past midnight.

How're you do on yours so far? Mine has gotten better - so yeah, i guess what you were told fits for me too. Good luck on your surgery! Let me know how you do :D

I started my preop diet today too! I only have 7 days but I already know they will be VERY long. You're so lucky to have a partner with you to share the pain. The chicken broth wasnt as disgusting as the protien shake surprisingly enough. I guess I thought they'd taste like slimfast. Boy was I wrong! Is it just me or is it extremely draining to the point that you can't even exercise like we're supposed to?

I don't think the protien is that bad but some are worse then others. Luckily I was pretty used to having them anyway - my husband is a gym rat (trying to get back involved since his injury). Just try mixing in fruits or maybe a small amount of Peanut Butter - maybe even some Jello powder. I don't know. But yeah, it'll take away some of the energy as your body shifts. I've been kind of tired - I guess that's where the extra supplements would help.

I had to do a 6 month requirement of documented dieting, so I started my ticker when I started losing weight.

GOOT LUCK EVERYONE!! just think how good we are going to look in JULY!! yeah baby!!

I can't wait for the summer in my new body either! :D We always take our big family vacation in July and I'm so excited for it this year - maybe I will actually feel comfortable in my bathing suit...

I can't wait for the summer in my new body either! :D We always take our big family vacation in July and I'm so excited for it this year - maybe I will actually feel comfortable in my bathing suit...

I know so much what you mean. We have a swimming pool and have family and friends over several days a week throughout the summer. Even on the hottest days I would sit in the shade or maybe sit on the edge of the pool with my feet in but never felt comfortable taking off my shirt to go swimming. This always disappointed my 6 and 8 year old daughters who want nothing more that to have me swim and play with them.

The only time I ever went into the pool was alone after dark. NOT THIS YEAR... I'M SWIMMING !!! :D

Good luck to everyone starting and to those who have already started the preop diet!! For me, the first few days were hard but then it got much easier and I stopped thinking about food. My fiancé (who was my boyfriend at the time) also did most of the preop diet with me which was helpful. When things got hard, I would just think about how much weight I was losing on the diet and that would give me renewed motivation. Good luck to everyone!! You can do this!

Keep your eye on the prize!!

Summer 2011 will be here before we know it.

I won't have to hide under a tshirt at the beach and capris on a 90+ day!

Day 2 of the pre op and woke to the taste of Protein this morning (yuck) couldn't eat this morning cuz I was queesy

other than that I'm doing pretty good.

Can't say that I'm full but I'm comfortable after my meal.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
