So I was banded on Monday, Nov. 22. Everything has been going good. If I never see Jell-O or broth again it will be too soon!! I have even lost 10 pounds. I am trying to take in all my Protein but I know that I am not getting enough calories. My main concern right now is this unbearable pain in my shoulder!! I have walked, applied a heating pad, taken gas X... nothing is working!! I broke down crying today for the first time! My family just starred at me shocked cuz nothing ever bothers me! I am scheduled to go back to work Monday... but I can't if I have this pain! If anyone has another method I would greatly appreciate any advise! Also... how long does this misery last?!? Thanks!

Stephanie

I had surgery on 11/19/2010 and I am still having pain in my left shoulder. I am wondering the same thing. I thought the CO2 gas would be gone by now. Is this a new type of gas that will be present when I eat certain foods? I can also feel it in my upper chest on the left side. I did find that laying down on my left side alleviates the pain, but when I get up, it comes back. I've tried the methods that Stephanie tried as well without relief.

It's the same with me.. when I lay down... I am somewhat okay. But as soon as I stand up... forget it!! I hope my doctor calls back, if he has any better advice I will let you know :)

Hi - I had surgery on 11/22/10 as well - I noticed that I have that pain usually after I eat. It does away when I take my pain medication. I tried to stay off it, but the bottom line is that there's a reason they gave it to us. I have 2 more refills. I am not one that takes things I don't have to. I have a high pain tolerance, but this is the only thing that has helped me.

Just my two cents.

Hi All, I too was banded on Nov 19th and feel the same...I feel like I'm 6mths pregnant - My tummy is still bloated out and I can't seem to get the gas out. I too do the heating pad, Gas-X, lying on my side etc and I'm struggling to fall asleep at night - often being up till 3am. This is the worst part of this whole procedure - I'll take another 14 day liquid diet over this gas.

I did see my surgeon for my post op and he assured me things will get back to normal in 2-3 weeks post op. He said there's a lot of swelling still inside and that contributes to the over bloated tummy...And too, I wondered if I was eating too fast & drinking too fast because right after I seem to burp a lot which is also painful.

It's nice to see we're not alone and there is a light at the end of this tunnel.

Since the 2 week pre op diet till now 1 week post op I've dropped 21 pounds - so I guess looking at any positive at this point will help.

Good luck guys, looking forward to getting back to normal again.

I had this for a couple weeks, even have a post on here. The gas X did not seem to help. I took the pain meds at night as this is when my pain was the worse. I would also like to add that if you are able to shower, standing under a warm shower seemed to bring relief. Also in bed turning from side to side might be worth a try. Make sure you are following the instructions about the Temperature of your liquid, nothing too hot or cold and don't drink through a straw as you may swallow too much air. liquids that are too warm/cold may cause spasms. However on the flip side sometimes warmer liquids seem to sooth that pain. Just know it will pass and if it does not call your doctor, that is why he/she is there and they will have remedies that might help.

oh honey do i know what you mean! Even the smell of chicken broth makes me nauseous now! I had the EXACT same pain. I was freaking miserable and then the 3rd day I walked around a lot and took gas-x. I ended up feeling better by the 4/5th day. I promise it will get better! I was so so upset and in pain I cried too!

Im 17 days post op and have felt okay for about 5 or 6 days now. I still burp like crazy, but I think thats expected. THe best advice i have is just to let hte burps out, dont hold them in. I did just about whatever I could to burp, and used the gas x chews (the stips made my stomach cramp up). It does get better, you just gotta keep at it.

My surgery was on the 18th, the gas is starting to let up. I do feel the pain in my left shoulder, but from past experience that is if my tummy is full. Someone did suggest somewhere on here to do windmills with your arms while walking around. The worst part was feeling like you have to burp but nothing would come out. I was so happy the other night I just got up the right way and was able to have my first burp. Lots of people suggest walking, and my feeling is do everything you can to get it out. Good luck!

I am very glad I am not alone. I had my surgery 11/23 and have the same pain. I can burp a little with some relief but miserable again a few minutes later. Hope everything gets back to normal soon

Bless your hearts! I was banded on 11/22 also. Fortunately, I did not suffer much gas pain. For the first two days, I faithfully walked for 5 minutes at a time every 15 minutes. Also, I would use 2 Gas-X Strips every 4 hours even if I didn't need them. I used that sparometer (sp?) thing that they sent me home from the hospital with that you take deep breaths from 10 times an hour. I don't know if the combination of those things is what helped or not, but I easily passed gas within 24 hours of surgery. Once I relieved that gas, the swelling in my tummy went down. You might try those things and see if they help. It surely couldn't hurt. I hope everyone feels much better soon.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
