Incision Infection

Okay everyone, I have an infection in a surgical site. It is awful, last saturday I noticed the infection started and I went to the emergency room and they cut open the incision right there. Now it has to get packed and unpacked every day, basic wound care. I was okay with it but now, I think I found a new infected area, which could mean the port needs to be removed and I have to go back in for surgery. I am not happy about this and I am soooo angry I can not even tell you. I know it isn't anyones fault but if the little spot doesn't clear up I might scream. If you saw how red and sore my belly is from the tape, you would cry for me. I know you would. I am waiting for the big moment I can go down a size in clothes but that isn't going to start happening until I start exercising. I can not keep like this too much longer with out going completely nuts. So I am just venting.

I completely feel your pain- I've been dealing with an incision issue for 8 months. I had a single incision lapband done, which my surgeon only glued shut. It never healed, and was always leaking fluids. 7 months after the initial surgery, they did a second surgery to find out what the problem was. Turns out the open incision had led to a port infection, which meant they had to remove the port. I just had a thir surgery on Tuesday for them to replace the port. They cut open the single incision again (which still hadn't healed), cleaned out the leaking tissues and then opened up a whole new incision site to put the new port in. At this point, I know I can fit into a size 16, but I'm so swollen, bruised and hurting I'm wearing 18-20's. I hope this last attempt works, everything heals up and nothing ends up leaking. I'm tired of bandages.

So sorry to hear this news! I can so feel your frustration right now. I would be going insane too. And angry and wow... I just can't imagine. I hope it's a quick and easy heal and you're able to move on from this. Be strong from this set back and I'll be thinking of you!

I have an infection as well. My surgery was 11-4. I am hoping its just an issue with the stitches and nothing that will hang around for any length of time. I am using triple antibiotic as well. I see my dr again on Monday. Probably going to get my first fill then. We'll see

My doctor said he was opening the incision a little to see how much it had to drain. Then he said to me that it was essential to get control of the infection before doing a fill. He will probably not do a fill until the would is healed because he doesn't want to risk even more infection spreading elsewhere. I hate this and my weight loss is pretty much stopped. I am starving all the time.

OMG ... I still have stitches and you guys are scaring me. I am allergic to the stupid bandages and my stomach is a wreck from those ... some areas look like a rash and some look scabbed over. I haven't put anything on them because I don't want anything to get in the incisions.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
