Exercise ideas to prevent flabby arms? Legs?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have been walking for exercise. I have my surgery Monday and I know I will be able to lose the weight.

I am worried about my arms and legs just becoming saggy with so much excess skin. Does anyone have any ideas/tips for exercises that may prevent that from happening?

Thanks!

It's great you are so sure the sugery is going to work. I think that is the attitude you want to have. If you work the band, eating right and excersising, it will surely work. As far as excess skin, it's a matter of the elasticity of the skin. Once the elasticity is gone, it will hang. I don't believe there is excercise or topical stuff that will prevent it. I lost 107 pounds and am having plastic surgery Dec. 1. I am having a Tummy Tuck and beast augmentation. Next will be arms and face. I have some loose skin on the sides and back, but it doesn't bother me much. My thighs are also a little "wrinkly". Again, it doesn't bother me much. Congrats on your impending surgery. Best wishes!

I have started using the as seen on tv "shake weight". I also use a pilates machine for toning. I must say it's working, i can see the change in my arms. When i started to lose the weight my arms were ugly. You should try the shake weight.

Good luck:wink:

Do weightlifting and run. Other than that you can only help stretched skin so much.

I am down 52lbs and have 20 more to go to reach goal and I have saggy underarm skin and I just can't get rid of it no matter how hard I try. I guess its just one of those things you have to get used to. Also I notice my knee are and upper front of my thigh area is a little saggy as well. Oh well I would rather be healthy and thin and have a little loose skin!!!!!

Thanks everyone for the advice. I used to do pilates but just have not started that yet. I have lost 30 lbs just doing pilates and walking so I will certainly start that up again.

Good luck to all of you!

I'm using my 2lb hand-weights and doing arm exercises at home (low weight, lots of reps to build muscle). I also do other weights when I go to the gym at my office. I've noticed a difference.

I am 62 years young. I have lost 100 lbs since lapband pre-diet and surgery on 10/30/09. Mostly I have been walking and doing weights exercise at the gym. I noticed my arms tightening up and my husband commented last week about my thighs. And, I had a NSV today, a lady that did not know me before my 100 loss, but was aware of the loss, told me that I had great looking legs and had I lost a lot there.

You can tighten flabby skin, but it doesn't happen overnight! Karen(kll724). (by the way, no plastic surgery for this girl)!!

Prior to my surgery I have been working out with a personal trainer who pushes me beyond my comfort zone, and taking a kettleball class. I have noticed changes in my arms in the 3 weeks I have been taking the class. There are a lot of workout videos you can buy and do the workout at home, for a small price. I think it is a awsome workout- especially for the arms:) Can't wait for my 4 weeks to heal so I can go back.

This is great to hear. I am so nervous about the skin piece of it. I have gotten a personal trainer and am starting today actually before my surgery on the 2nd.

I have talked to a lot of people that didn't even need surgery for the flab because of their age. The younger you are and the slower you loose weight the better chance you give your skin a chance to bounce back. The older you are the less chance you are going to have to have that skin bounce back. You also have to do leg and arm exercises.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
