BMI of 35, wondering about comorbidities...

Recommended Posts

I have recently started looking into getting lap-band®® surgery. As stated in the title I have a BMI of 35, I’m not sure if what other problems I have would be considered a comorbidity. From what I can tell my insurance will cover the surgery with a BMI of 35 with one comorbidity. I am currently taking medication for Hypothyroidism, Low good cholesterol and depression….would any of these be considered a comorbidity?

Thanks for any information you can give me!

I also posted this in the insurance forum, but thought that maybe it didn’t belong there.

The hypothyroidism might just be enough. I had a BMI of 35 with depression and osteoarthritis as my comorbidites and was approved on the first submission. My insurance required 2 comorbidities and the surgeon later gave me a diagnosis of mild sleep apnea - which I'm not totally convinced about. None the less, I was approved. Good Luck.

I hope that it is enough, I go to a surgeon’s seminar next month. Thanks for your reply, what insurance do you have?

I was at 35. I gained some weight before I requested the surgery - I was at 37 and got approved. I have diabetes 2 and hypo thyroid. It has been 4 weeks since the surgery and I am at 33 BMI. I lost 28lbs in 4 weeks since the surgery - isn't that awesome?

You can always appeal if they deny you.

That is awesome! You are doing so great!

I also have a family history of diabetes, my father had juvenile diabetes (not sure what type that is) and died from complications of his diabetes…something to do with his heart. I didn’t really know my father too well, so I’m not sure of the exact details of his death. Diabetes has always been a concern for me since it runs in every generation on my father’s side. I’ve been lucky so far and I don’t want to press my luck anymore.

Thanks

High cholesterol, depression and hypothyroid all can be co-morbidities as well as high blood pressure, stress incontenence and some other things...each insurance co has their own requirements...just call your insurance company and ask or find the book that spells out your coverage and you will find it...I was amazed at my consult though at how much the Dr.s staff knows about getting things approved...they are pretty good at it. I bet all will be well if you consult with a surgeon.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
