Not sure what is going on!

Recommended Posts

I am not 2 sure what is going on with my band. For the past 2 weeks I have not been able to eat without everything getting stuck. I can't drink with out feeling the golfball in my chest. I am scheduled for a fill on the 29th and it doesn't look like I will be going. I have lost another 5 lbs but I am nervous that I am not getting the nutrition that I need. My last fill was around October 28th. I wasn't this tight till about 2 weeks ago. After my monthly cycle finished. I figured that it would loosen up but it has not. I talked to my Dr's office and they told me to call on Friday to cancel my appt. If I decide to. Could my band have slipped? Any information from you guys will be wonderful!! Thanks and have a Merry Christmas!

Welcome to the delayed restriction club!!

Unless you have had some strong vomitting episodes, it is unlikely that your band has slipped.

I just had three weeks of feeling super restricted (eating was pretty uncomfortable), but it finally seems to be easing up somewhat. I'm still frustrated with trying to get in all my liquids, so I'm not back to where I was yet.

Since many people comment that stress really affects their bands, it could be the upcoming holiday season getting to you, even if you don't feel particularly stressed. I definitely would not get a fill at this point.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply! I am PBing but I am pretty much making myself. When I feel like something is stuck my natural instinct is to make it come back up. Yesterday morning I took a bite of scrambled egg and I have felt like something has been stuck every since. So since I am PBing and sometimes vomiting but I am making myself do it does that count?

Yes, that counts. Definitely a dangerous cycle to get into. STOP!!!

I recommend "priming" yourself with very warm liquids first, then eating/drinking non-challenging foods (full liquids, blended chili, yoghurt, etc.) for a couple of days to rest your stomach/esophagus. The more irritated they become, the tighter you will be.

Although eggs are "soft", they don't really disinegrate into liquid when chewing, so I would avoid them for a while. Also, for the mornings particularly I would consider doing a liquid Protein source (if you're like most, you are tightest in the mornings and nights.) Save your "real" food for lunch, early dinner.

Whatever you choose to do, I would recommend that your goal be to stop the vomitting, involuntary or otherwise.

Take care of yourself, Kelly.

Thanks! I am gonna do the liquid thing for the next 3 days and see if anything changes. If I am just irritating my stomach then sure it will swell and get tighter. I talked to my Dr's office and again and they told me to go ahead and go to the hospital for a fill and tell the Dr what is going on and let him look at the band to see if everything is ok and maybe do an unfill. Maybe I am just tight because of the irritation that I have done to my stomach. Will 3 days of liquids make a difference with the irritation?

Three days should be plenty to calm the irritation, particularly if it is recent and there are no other reasons for the new restriction.

It never hurts to have the band placement checked out, so it's good you're having that done. Don't worry about having fill removed - if you're too loose later, you can have some put back in. As you are finding out, fills are not an exact science - there are too many factors and day to day changes. ;)

That is true! I am gonna wait and see how things go. If I am on liquids and everthing goes back to the way it was before I'm not gonna get any taken out. I was hoping to have another fill before the new year due to insurance is paying 100% now. But, my health is more important than the money:-) Thanks so much for the replies. This board is a lifesaver!

Oh my GOD. I have been feeling exactly the same way and very scared something might be wrong. I have been very tight for the past few days. Unfortunately for me, I am going on a cruise today which means no food for me. Almost anything that I eat gives me the golf ball feeling. I PB 2x yesterday. So I thought I should do a Protein drink just to get some nutrition. I drank only half of the can because it felt like it was stuck. So I went to bed. At around 1:30 a.m. I got up cauphing. I could taste the drink in my throat so I am not sure if I was PB in my sleep or the fact that my head was lower than my body might have pushed the food back.

I hope this passes, I am very scared that something might be wrong.

Mary:(

Just to remind everyone, when you are very restricted, do NOT lie down within about 3-4 hours of eating/drinking something. It is very likely it could come back up, and waking up choking is dangerous, as if you aspirate any of that liquid you could get chemical pneumonia, which is no fun what-so-ever.

Avoid spicy foods, caffeine, carbonation, alchohol and acidic foods, such as orange juice, as those are all irritants and will make things worse.

Try and do relaxing things as much as possible, like hot tubs (whoo hoo!), massages, listening to soothing music, drinking warm fluids... It is time to pamper ourselves!!

Thanks so much Donali for your replies! This little tool makes me want to invest in an x-ray machine. I wish there was another way to make sure everything was ok other than by x-ray. Bebbly I hope you have a wonderful time on your cruise and I hope this goes away for you and me:)

Have a wonderful Holiday Season!

wow kelly! i hope you loosen up a little after some liquids you too bebbly and have a wonderful cruise.

i pb'd 3 times this weekend after a month or without doing once. unfortunalty i think mine was from not listening to my body and continuing to eat.

i'll be measuring my food for a while. it scares me when i golfball/PB it feels like i should be choking even though i can breath.

i think i just simply 'wanted to eat more'

Hi ladies!

How very weird! I've been experiencing increased restriction lately too! My fill was on 10/20 and the restriction seemed to have been easing before and through Thanksgiving and beyond. But just in the last week I'm suddenly having to stop eating after only a few bites.

I'm not complaining, as it's not been uncomfortable or troublesome, but wow--how very odd that it's happening to so many of us!

I guess we'd have to say:

"Can you say S T R E S S ?" Surely that is the only thing we all have in common at this time?

Unless... NO... THAT can't be it... You know how women in close proximity tend to cycle together... Perhaps we're starting to restrict "in sync." lol

;)

I have been burping alot (I know that is gross) but I thought if I told you in detail someone would have an answer for me about what is going on!! I am going on Monday to the hospital to figure this thing out. I am getting worried that something is wrong. But, hopefully it is just the stress!! Cause I have been feeling that for sure!

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
