Where I'm at....how were you at this stage?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I was banded on 10-01-10. I have felt pretty good, other than the normal pain that goes along with surgery. No nausea, vomitting, indigestion...thank goodness. Ok, so for the TMI part, no BM as of yet...normal? I got on the scale(couldn't help it) and was up 3 lbs from day of surgery..normal? Water, shakes and broth all go down fine, although I'm pretty conservative. Thought about walking on treadmill today but not sure I can get my tennis shoes on, bending is a bear! Just curious how everyone else did at this stage. Thanks

I had my husband tie my shoes, but we walked the neighborhood because Dr. said no to the treadmill. Perfectly normal to have weight gain after surgery. They pump you full of fluids. Every thing else seems normal. I ended up taking some Miralax in order to get the bowels moving.

Yea your body is in healing phase - for the first 6 weeks I was told not to worry about weight loss, to focus on healing and letting my body adjust to the band. I walked at the mall a bit a few days after surgery, but be careful to not overdo it!

Totally normal---as long as you're not uncomfortable, you don't have to worry. There's just not that much moving through the bowel right now. Plus, meds and anesthesia slow things down a bit, temporarily.

I understand. The pre-op I was on for 10 days consisted of Carnation Instant Breakfast with milk. I was totally bound up and had to get some relief with Fleets enemas the night b/4 10/2 surgery. I suspect things will be very sluggish during the clear liquid phase and will start Mirilax today. The narcs will also slow down the digestive center and anesthesia is still clearing.

Lots of passive stuff going on in the gut right now.

Wishing you well!

I was banded on 10-1-10 as well. Day after surgery was good, day 2 was rotten. I felt nauseous all day long. Today being day 3 is better, still not getting much down in terms of food though. My doctor said i should have lots of creamy Soups, Protein Drinks and Gatorade. I'm lucky if I get one Protein Drink in a day, and maybe a cup of Soup. My appetite just isn't there and after the severe nausea from yesterday, i'm scared. Since surgery on Friday I'm down 9 lbs. For a total of 20 including my low carb pre-op diet. I'm sure much of this is Water weight as I'm not hydrating myself as much as I should.

Wishing you all lots of luck!

Hi Fluffy!

I was also banded on 10/1. First couple of days were really rough with gas and pain but today is definitely better. I've been drinking 3 Protein Shakes a day with a little bite of Jello here and there. Its been raining here for the past few days but I did get out and walk today and it felt good. Tomorrow is my 1st post op exam. Keep me posted on how you're doing!

I was banded 9/27 and had several days of Constipation with no weight loss and was frustrated too. Then suddenly I went and the pounds started coming off. My only challenge thus far is getting enough Water in.

Some alternatives I was given for protien (the powders give me nausea) post liquid diet:

sugar free pudding with 1% milk, milk has the Protein.

Any pureed baby foods - this may have helped the consitpation?!. They aren't cheap but it's much easier to get the pureed consistency and they are measured 2.5 or 4 oz jars. However, you have to read labels and find ones high in Protein. I like the meat and gravy flavors (chicken and chicken gravy for example) and they have 8g of protein.

Greek yogurt - it has way more protein in it. I'm eating the Chobani brand with the fruit at the bottom, 0 fat and it's 14g of protein. If you get the plain it's 23g but doesn't taste all that great. I added sugar free Jello powder to it and it tasted better. They mentioned Kefir as well but it's not as high in protein.

Good luck everyone and I'm glad we all have eachother! Makes this so much easier to go through... thank you all!

Hi, I was banned on 10/1 and I have been in severe pain as far as gas is concerned. My stomach is very swollen and bloated, and I have gained 1 pound. My doctor has me on solid liquids for the fist week. I am not nauseous or anything, just severe gas pains in my chest. I have walked several times a day, but not much relief. Gas-x is not working, either! Any other suggestions? Thanks for any advice anyone can give me! :-)

Thank you both for the reply. I actually feel much better today than yesterday.... still not 100% by all means, but much better. My husband bought me some Maalox extra (liquid) as well as some Probiotics and one of them must have worked. I walked 2 miles yesterday..... 4 seperate 1/2 mile trips. It does help, but just a temporary relief. For all you new Bandsters..... the gas HURTS, but today I feel as though it was worth it. Lost pounds overnight!

Hi All! One week out today, can't believe it! I'm still having sharp pains on my left side and shoulder, and I get these sort of spasms in the middle of my chest. Doc says its from hernia repair and will go away. Although I feel great otherwise, I wish these nagging pains would go away!! Hope everyone else is doing well.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
