Any One Have to Keep Getting an Unfill? - Going in for 3rd One.

Recommended Posts

I have to keep going in for an unfill. I think I was at 9.5 ccs. I started getting full fast, then I could even drink. One day I was really thirsty and trying to drink a smoothie. I had to slowly sip it. I drank about 1/4th of it, then threw up. The first time they took out .5 CCs, the last time they took out 1 cc. Now I'm having the same problem. After eating some soft foods, I'm getting plugged. I just drank some Gatorade, and threw up. I haven't eaten for 4 hours. After they took out 1 CC 1 week ago, I could eat and drink again. The nurse said my stomach may be swelling from stress. Want to know if anyone has had this problem before. Can't seem to drink when this happens. Any suggestions?

I had to have 3 unfills and then after 6 weeks I just had a very small fill. The one thing that the PA siad was it is common to mess it up after an unfill. Meaning that we get a too much fill, can't get stuff down but keep trying and it causes swelling. A little more is taken out and we think we can resume solids and many often forget to follow the Clear Liquids, full liquid, mushies solids. She said anytime I PB I should go back to the clear liquid, full liquid, mushy than solid. Things get swollen and it takes time to heal them. I am comfortably losing 1 pound a week again and will get a slight fill when I go in four weeks. Following the clear, full, mushy, solid this time each time I had an issue really made a difference.

Yeah. I finally said the heck with it and made them take me down to 6cc. I stayed there until I was sure the pbing, sliming and reflux were a thing of the past. Just had 1 cc put back in yesterday and so far so good.

Thanks for your reply. Do you know what was causing the problem? I was 225 on Thursday. Yesterday I was 222. This morning I was 220, and tonight I'm 218. This isn't normal. I'm leaving a message for the Dr."s team tonight. They said if I kept having problems there were going to do an upper GI.

So are you upset that you are losing weight or that your losing it so fast? I would take any weight loss as a positive...

Not all weight loss is positive. I've never lost this much weight this fast, so I know something is wrong. I'm very thirsty right now. I can't even keep Water down. I just tried to eat a popcicle, and after 5 minutes it came up. I feel like drinking Water out of a hose for an hour. Or swollowing a 10 gallon ice bucket of water they use for the football players. I'm getting desperate right now. I know the doctor is the first thing I need to do in the morning.

Well in that case YES you should see your doctor ASAP especially since you can't keep liquids down...I'm newly banded so I dont know anything about PB'ing or sliming or anything like that. At this point in my journey any loss is a good loss but if I were having problems like you I would see it your way for sure. Good Luck tomorrow may you find some relief soon..

Best wish for you on the banding. I was banded in Feb 2010. At today's weight I'm 83 lbs. down. I know once they take some out, I'll be back to 225. Hope everything goes well for you. Since my banding I've gotten off of insulin, and last week the doctor took me off Actos, and moved me to Glimepiride once a day instead of twice. I still take the metformin twice a day. 1000 mg/each. It's done wonders for me. Keep up the good work.

At 9.5cc, I'm surprised someone hasn't figured out that you most likely are too full and the constant pbing, etc. has also most likely caused swelling which only makes the problem worse.

I was at 8cc and made them take 2cc out after playing around with taking it out at .25cc at a time and not having any relief. Immediate relief. The surgeon said I was most likely swollen/irritated from the pbing, sliming, etc. and just needed to let my stomach calm down before attempting another fill.

Last Saturday, after 7 weeks (could've been sooner but I held off), they put 1cc back in. No sliming, pbing or anything and I do have some slight restriction because I do have to make sure to chew thoroughly. I'm almost certain I'll need more fill...and may even get back up to 8...but I'm going to take my time because I don't show an immediate effect from a fill. Sometimes it takes 2 weeks (don't know why but it does) before I get results after a fill.

Thanks for sharing. I was thinking it was more serious. I didn't sleep all night. I was vomiting bile since 3 this morning. I am very thirsty right now. I was thinking I had a slip, or some GI problems (ulcer/esophogus problems). Thanks for your comments. Gives me some hope they can fix this problem.

I currently have nothing in my band. I tried the 1/2 cc, and 2 cc. It did nothing, so the surgeon has removed it all. I can eat/drink anything and when my month is done, I will have the surgeon replace around 1 -2 cc as I have NO restriction and have gained back some of the weight that had dropped off in a week(5 lbs). I was just like you, could not eat or drink anything! Good luck:cursing:. Karen (kll724)

PS:believe me you will enjoy the lack of restriction for a few weeks!!!!

I had this problem for months. he finally unfilled me about 1 cc for several months. I got an upper GI (I'm at my 2 year mark) confirmed everything is okay and then is slowly filling me again. My weight loss has stopped, but there has been no gain, and I am okay with that for now.

One of the things I have learned is that there is some swelling when you are throwing up and I read a suggestion once that maybe liquid Motrin to help the swelling? I haven't had any issues recently but I have it on hand just in case I do.

Good luck, I remember how frustrating it is to keep getting filled and unfilled.

cheers for the comments guys, I'm in the same situation at the moment - struggling to get 3 sips of Water in & keep thinking how NOT good this is for my body. Weight loss isn't everything (I know, I know lol) and I don't want to end up in hospital because I'm dehydrated. I completely forget about going back on the liquids then building up re the swelling - good point !!! Sipping on Optifast at the mo, going down very slowly but going down !!

Thanks for all the good comments. Had an appointment today. Opened me up 2ccs then sent me for an UGI. Found I had a slip. "#$$@!!". Sent me back to the Drs. for a complete unfill. Said I have to wait 2-3 weeks. Then go for another UGI. The Dr. is going to look at the x-rays tomorrow, and give his analysis. The X-ray tech told me she had another one today that was able to refill without an additional surgery.

That's exactly what I am praying for, a healing without further surgery. I don't like the fact that I have no restriction, either. Best of luck for both of us. I am about 1 1/2 weeks ahead of you on healing. Karen(kll724)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
