Breakfast Problems

Recommended Posts

I'm starting to think I just can't eat breakfast? I've only had a problem with food twice... and it was in the morning. I was in a big rush the first time, but today I slowly chewed a food I had no problems with before... and it went down, but it was terrible. Do you think your band loosens as the day goes on? Does that even make sense?

A friend of mine has had a band for years and he has exactly the same problem, and yes bands do loosen as the day goes on. You can either skip Breakfast completely if you are not hungry or have something soft like 1/2 - 1c of yogurt. Or drink some Water 15mins before you eat to loosen things us. The literature from my clinic states that skipping a meal is fine as long as you are not hungry.

Thanks. I just had a cup of skim milk.... I guess I will never be a breakfast person. I'm always late in the mornings anyway. :)

My Dr told me that most people have difficulty getting something down in the morning cuz the band stiffens overnight. He told me drinking some warm tea helps.

I TOTALLY know what you mean! First thing in the morning I can barely eat anything....I kinda have gotten myself addicted to smoothies as I can get one on the way to work and sip on it....gives me yogurt and Protein anyway! And I have noticed that when the humidity is really high here and it is so stinking hot that I seem tons tighter then, too. Crazy!

Many of us have problems eating solids the first thing in the morning.

Do NOT skip breakfast though. It really is the most important meal of the day. It jump starts our metabolism for the whole day.

I usually have yogurt fr breakfast but if I let Cereal like miniwheats or raisin bran get a little soggy, I have no problem with it.

You definitely have more tissue inflamation when you first wake up...an external/visible example of this is a puffy face. I've learned that it is quite common to be tighter in the morning and to have more difficulty eating solid foods. Some people have a Protein shake for breakfast. I have found that I can eat solid foods only if I am busy doing something else and stop to take a bite every couple of minutes.

I've also found that I'm more sensitive to certain foods early in the day and cannot tolerate fried foods or very acidic foods like Tomato sauce. If I have either of these for lunch, I am almost guaranteed to experience pain and nausea. However, by late afternoon and evening, I can stomach almost anything. Weird.

Like you, I have a very hard time eating and even drinking milk or a Protein shake in the morning. I've found that if I have some hot tea or coffee and wait a little while, I can usually manage some yogurt or a shake. I've talked to my dr and she said to really try and get some Protein down in the morning, even if it is only a 1/4 to 1/2 cup of milk. I've found that in the last month I've got really good restriction and have to really focus on just getting enough protein and calories in every day, my problem is if I get the protein/calories then I have a hard time getting enough Fluid.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
