Why can't I use a straw?

Recommended Posts

Yep, same for me...was told to give it a try...I do NOT like the extra air..not worth it to me. Same for gum!

I've been using a straw for at least 15 years now and this was almost a deal-breaker for me..... just kidding but I was like "oh no, you're kidding, right???"

What I did was buy a water bottle at Walmart with the slide-up sippy top on it. I think I will be ok with one of those. For some reason anytime I try to drink anything withOUT a straw, I spill.

Does anyone have any other ideas or is this something I will probably just have to get used to as well because my Dr. and nurse and everyone has told me NO STRAWS.

Here's my dilemma. I used to always use a straw. Always. Bought the bags of them at the store and used them up. But now, I'm NOT using a straw (saw on these boards not to) and I'm burping and have more hiccups than I've had in my life! I don't know whether it's related to the new band or getting used to drinking without a straw. I know a nice insulated bottle with a straw top for my Water would be wonderful right now....

I was put ON a straw diet after surgery! Anything I could get through a straw is my diet till 1st fill.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
