Anyone bandless Post op

Recommended Posts

I hear many people mention their doctor has said and in some cases made them sign a document making it clear that if once they get in there and your liver is too fatty you could potentially wake up without a band. I wonder if this has actually happened ??

I had to sign that too. I have never heard of it happening to anyone here, but I guess it does thus the declaration.

My surgeon did not require a pre-op diet and in the entire education program (pre-op) no mention was made of a fatty liver or the need to shrink the liver. My surgery was performed at a Center of Excellence. I really wonder if this is a boogie man doctors use to test patients' compliance.

My surgeon didn't put me on a pre-op diet but the nurse did mention to me to eat low-fat and said that they had one girl who they took into surgery and they couldn't operate b/c of her liver size. they said that she had eat out the whole week before surgery b/c her family kept wanting to "treat" her because she wouldnt be able to have any of the stuff after surgery. They said thats the only time they have really had it happen. she ended up getting banded two weeks later.. but if that happens she ended up with two anesthesia and hospital bills instead of one.. which would really suck.

I know someone who had their surgery put off and I also know someone who could not have their surgery laproscopically because of the condition of their liver.

There was a member on here that no longer posts that had her first surgery aborted because of her liver. Her name is restlessmonkey - look up some of her older posts.

I also was not required to be on a pre-op diet and no mention/scare was made about needing to shrink the liver. My surgery was also performed by a Center of Excellence. Honestly, I believe that if you go to a surgeon who has more experience w/laproscopic surgery, this should not be an issue.

My surgeon is George Fielding is kind of one of the leaders in the field of laparoscopic surgery (not just the lap band) and he explained the reason most people do a preop diet and it does relate to the liver. They need to manipulate and lift the liver. Imagine doing this to a piece of bread, it may crack or break. The liquid diets make the liver more flexible and thinner (most of us have fatty livers to begin with). I think the pre-op diet probably correlates to overall statistics on outcomes, honestly. If you do the research, the doctors with the lowest negative outcomes probably are the MOST conservative preop.

Yep this is how it was explained to me also. I was also given a picture of my band in place on my stomach. You can actually see that they have my liver folded over in order to get to my stomach. If your liver is fatty it will tear and bleed no matter how good your surgeon is b/c it HAS to be moved out of the way.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
