Couch to 5K ?

Recommended Posts

I'm starting the Couch to 5K program this coming week and found some great podcasts to download that break down the times for you. Anyone else try this program to get started with running? I use to ran about 7 years ago then had knee surgery and never picked it up. I'm hoping this will get me started again!

I'll have to read up on this. I've never been a runner but I'd love to be. It's great cardio. My knee problems/pain have always kept me from running but once I start losing weight that should get better also.

How does it work?

It's a great 9 week program that teaches you how to run. It builds up your endurance by following certain walk/run program 3x a week for 9 weeks. Here's the website for more info. I start tomorrow :cursing:

Cool! Maybe I'll start (again) tomorrow too. I've started it in the past. I gave up a little over a week ago, after a dr apt that didn't go too well. I haven't really had motivation to do any kind of excersize....

I just started this today! I was thinking about starting a thread to see if anyone wanted to join me in the program. I'm planning to do a 5K the first week of November. I've rounded up a couple of friends to run it with me as well.

One question - I was banded on July 29 and today was the first day I tried jogging and I could feel my port moving. Anyone else have this sensation while jogging?

The doctor said after 2 weeks I could go back to regular exercise with the exception of lifting any weights over 20 lbs which would need to wait for at least 4 weeks post surgery.

I am also interested in doing this. I am looking for a group of people to do this with. How many on here are interested in committing to the program. I just can't seem to do this on my own and need the support. I REALLY used to love running. Now, probably due to the excess weight, i struggle with it alot. Actually dislike it is the more accurate answer. I am hoping that I will lose some weight and learn to love it again. I would really like a comitted team if anyone is interested in keeping up with each other.

We can do this!! Today will be W1D3 and after my "run" on Tuesday, I'm thinking I may do 4 days of W1 instead of 3 before going to the next week. We'll see how today goes. I'm also going to try doing this at the gym as opposed to the park and see if that helps me fell like I'm prepared to move on.

Great job! Did you find that you did each week once, or did you feel like you had to go back and restart a week at all? I am doing my 3day of Week 1 tomorrow and I'm curious if I will be able to move on to Week 2

I'm doing C25K! There's an iphone application that I use that's been really easy and fun. W6D3 is tomorrow. I skipped week 2 but repeated a day during week 5. I used to run before I gained weight, but I wasn't expecting my body to fall back into it as easily as it has; I'm enjoying running more now than I ever did previously! I'm registered to run the Disney Half Marathon in January; training for that starts in October!

I never did a whole week over. I just did it for another day and that usually helped. Keep it up. It is amazing.

Don't worry if you have to do a week over, just keep at it. I could not get past week 5 no matter how hard I tried or how many times I did the week over. I just couldn't do it. I hired a personal trainer at my gym and that made all the difference in the world. She had me concentrate on overall strength, along with cardio at first. Then we went to running for the cardio. Apparently, I was just not strong enought to do a 5k before the strength training because I can now run a 5k. My point is keep trying and don't be afraid to ask for help if you get stuck.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
