Had Surg Friday and need help with pain??

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was banded on Friday 30 Jul. I am experiencing a pain about 8 to 10 inches above my navel. I would describe it as it being in the middle of my breast bone and it comes in waves and then it goes away. I'm thinking it maybe gas pains but not really sure? It almost feels like the band maybe cause it gets worse after I sip on liquids.I have gas in my shoulders and stomach and chest and I can deal with that along with the incesion discomfort but this wave of pain in my breast bone area really hurts I might get it every few minutes than it will stop for a while than come back again. Any ideas? I am also having a hard time getting all my liquids in. the dr. has me on full liquids for the next 2 weeks. I am really only stomach just Water and sugar free koolaid right now. I tried some yogurt earlier and I got some sharp pains in my stomach and chest so I stopped. Thanks for any suggestions just trying to feel better !! I just want to know everything I am feeling is normal..I definitly dont feel like I can be very active at all as of today..I am walking around my house and have passed some gas today but not much. My pain is worse once I get up from a lying position and start moving

I am feeling the same that you do........Tired of feeling this way and I am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo damn hungry. I am really tempted to eat some sf pudding tonight instead of waiting on tomorrow. On tomorrow I start my full liquid diet. My head is killing me. I am sick of sf Jello and popsicles. I need something that is a little thickier.:rolleyes2:

I found if I drink something warm I was alot more comfortable..Something about the cold drinks just makes you feel crampy. Try some warm broth. Hope it helps.

Also remember your surgeon did alot of work inside of your body, he cut you open he moved stuff around he sewwd stuff up its a big shock on your system. It will get better I promise..I started feeling like myself at about 2 weeks.

Hi Nicole we were banded the same day. I have the same issues with gas pain and walking really has helped out. I also take one or two minute breaks between sips which has helped prevent the sharp gas pains. Keep up with your pain meds to help with the muscle soreness and incision pain. Hope you feel

better soon.

I was banded on July 27th and had the same thing. I found that if I drank something to cold it hurt as well. Which is horrible because I love my drinks to be cold. My dr has me on Full liquids but I am allowed to have cream of wheat which has been a life saver for me. It will get better I promise.

perhaps we can start a "banded July 30th" group?? (Layla's Grandma... you are very comforting!) I have tried to keep my lap-band a private thing.... so I've sent my husband out for slim-fast and some Soup. My doctor gave me a list that adds cream of wheat and puddings/yougurt, and cream Soups after two weeks. I may starve by then!

Hi Everyone. I had surgery on the 30th too. I am still very sore and have the gas pain. The pain med my Doc prescribed seems to help A LOT but makes me sleepy. Nicole74, it definately sounds like gas in your chest. I have it too. The walking and taking Gas X really helps. I know you dont feel like it, I certainly dont, but I am doing it and it is helping.

To date, I have no appetite. I am eating because I know that I need to but very small amounts. (That is a good thing). Hopefully, I will stay this way for a while.

I jumped on the scale and I see no difference from Thursday night (pre-op) but then again, I am full of air and swelling....so who knows...maybe that is adding some weight?

Has anyone else that had surgery Friday step on the scale yet?

Sorry to hear about the pain. As was said above make sure all liquids you drink for the first 5 days are "room temp" or warmer. I found anything from the fridge caused the sharp pains in my breastbone. I also found chamomile tea was AWESOME at making the gas pains less noticable. Also make sure you are taking 2 gas strips every 6 hours, even if you are not feeling gas pain, helps stop it from building. Also if you have someone that doesnt mind sit up in the bed and have them pat you soft but firm on the middle of you back where your shoulderblades meet, just like you would burp a baby, this helped me VERY much.

I am in agreement with the two others that posted to take GAS X. I used the strips that dissolve on your tongue and took the max dosage. WHAT A RELIEF it was! I was MISERABLE for several days until I took those out of despiration, not really believing it was gas. The shoulder pain was so horrible, I felt like I wanted to pass out several times. It worked wonders for me  Good luck!!

I found Hot black tea was so soothing...I really feel for you Nicole74 and the others that have just been done and are in pain too. I was done in November 09 and I had pain for a good 2 weeks and wasn't back to doing my normal thing for about 5 weeks maybe 6.

Some people swell more than others and I had major swelling for quite some time.

I had a lot of pains in my shoulders due to gas but like someone else just said they muck around a lot inside your stomach and its not exactly minor surgery either. You just take the time you need to get over this and just do what you feel you can.

If you are concerned about the pain can you call your Dr or nurse and ask them if it is normal, and if so can they give you anything stronger for the pain to help get you through??

I know I have had to have another 2 op's since then and I have been a real sook with my pain, but I take panadene max (probly diff in the states I am from australia) and with my most recent surgery I was given a script for pain relief panadene forte to help me through when the pain was the most intense.

I think you will find that it will settle after a few weeks but if you are concerned call your Dr....thats what he/she is there for and what you pay them for too

Take care and hope it eases for you soon (hugs feel better)

Nicole,

I was banded on Thurs. and am having the same feelings you are describing. About all I know to do is just keep drinking slowly and make sure your hydrated.

Last night I tried some sf pudding and it felt really heavy in my chest. Not for sure how to describe the pain, but kind of like a rolling pressure. Luckily I am experiencing no hunger pangs.

And lol....since I have been banded I have a new motto:

"If I would have known it was going to hurt this bad, I would have put the cheeseburgers down years ago!"

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
