Odd and possibly stupid question

Recommended Posts

My husband and I visited Philidelphia/NYC this past weekend. We have family there. We live in Kentucky though. I found my band unusually tight while away, for example; not hungry until lunch, then 2 chicken nuggets, a light dinner, stuck easy from Thursday through Sunday.

But then I get home on Sunday and yesterday and today I'm fine; or example today:

B:Protein shake

L:a piece of turkey with a cheese stick wrapped inside and some wholegrain chips

D:Small leftover square of lasagna, a tiny sliver of homemade birthday cake (husband's bday)

Question: Anyone notice that their band reacts to different geographical locations(we drove but I just didn't know if it was because I was up higher on the east coast compared to where we are now) Is that a silly question?

I should mention that my lasagna was made with low carb noodles that were soft, fat free cottage cheese and a combination of ground turkey and italian sausage, so it was pretty healthy. It is what he wanted for his birthday. Plus I have lost almost 60lbs in six months post-op.

Hmmmm... you bring up an interesting point...

I live on the Oregon Coast (sea level) and a few weeks back visited my parents that live in the Sierra Nevada Mountains @ 4000 feet... I was a mess the whole time I was there.... PB'd about 8 times in a week (which is very very high for me - usually once a week, max)Not sure if it was the altitude change or the change in food?!? Hmmmmm

Let's see what others say.... we might notice a pattern!

I haven't noticed a change with geography, but I have noticed a change with stress. Usually the day I travel somewhere, I can barely eat. I haven't gotten stuck, but I think it's because I am eating almost nothing. It seems to me like the traveling stresses me to some degree (even though I'm having a great time) and I'm tighter than usual. I can feel it like you did and I stick to things that are safe. After I'm there for a day or 2, I can usually eat normally again.

As I'm sure you know, these bands are incredibly fickle. It's hard to say what is causing the tightness. I'm just glad I can tell I'm tighter and can avoid the questionable foods. We're off on vacation next week, I'll have to see how it goes this time. We're going to Cape Cod and I'm hoping I can eat the lobster...

I got so tight when I went to Vegas that I could barely eat. But, I figured it was because I wasn't drinking as much Water as normal and I was drinking alcohol. So, I was probably a bit dehydrated and I know that makes my band tighter.

I notice when I travel for more than 3 hours my band gets tighter. Humidity, stress, TOM, dehydration, extremely cold foods can all seem to cause problems at one time or another.

I can't always tell if I'm tight or not on these occasions so I just have to be careful when I feel any of these things. They tend to be my triggers. It really is kind of a learning process for everyone since we all seem to have different experiences.

well there was a serious heat wave and we were walking from kingdom come. Also we could have been really tired from driving and sometimes only ate once a day or had a snack. Usually I am extremely tight the first meal or first bite then I can loosen up. I just know I got stuck really easy and slimed more than normal. But my stuck episodes don't last forever, once the offender is gone. I eat small enough bites but sometimes even mashed up food in my mouth goes down slow and the painful need to burp never goes away.

But I'm fine now that I am home, no sticks, I had some steel cut oats for Breakfast with a bit of Protein powder tossed in it and the topping off of pizza for lunch and I have nibbled this afternoon after the YMCA(I am usually hungry in the evenings) but nothing to humongous.

heat wave makes my band incredibly tight. I live in NJ and we've had 100 degree days here for the past month.. aka I haven't eaten a real meal in about that long. most days I end up revisiting what i' ve eaten. ugh. i can't wait for winter.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
