When did you return to work?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone :)

I don't lift things at work, but I do walk a lot - about 12,000-14,000 steps at work each day. my surgery is on a Monday, Aug 9th, and i plan on going back to work on Wed, Aug 18th (a little over a week later). In your opinion, is that enough? My doctor says if I don't feel well, he'll ok an extra week off, but I really can't afford to be off work that long, so I'm hoping one week is enough. I was just wondering how long some of you were off post-op. Thanks!

If there is no lifting, I definitely think that's long enough. I am a nurse so I felt ready to do that job after 2 weeks...which entails a whole lot more than walking. After 5 weeks, I was completely doing all my job duties.

I am a teacher so I walk and stand a lot during the day. I didn't take any time off work and had my surgery on a Sat and went back to work on the Monday. Monday and Tuesday were a little hard but I was fine Thursday and 100% back to normal by the Friday so if you take a week off work you will be fine.

I went away a week post op to a beach and mudfest where I was on my feet all day for 8 hours and even forgot I had the band. The more you move around the faster you recover.

Good luck :)

You have planned well. A week is just about what you 'need' in my opinion, but you'll feel better w/the couple extra days that you have planned. I am a wimp when it comes to pain and I had my parents visit and I was cooking Christmas dinner exactly one week after my surgery. I was doing so well that my parents admitted that they would forget I was still recovering (even though my mom had lapband surgery herself one year earlier). I was a little more tired than normal, but pretty much operating at 95% after one week.

I'd been told by many people they were fine in a couple of days, so I'd only asked for a week off work, but it actually took me two weeks to get back to work. I had to call in the following week because I just couldn't sit or stand comfortably (I sit at a computer all day), and I couldn't put on regular clothing (like a bra). This could, however, be because I also had hernia surgery in addition to the band.

I had surgery on a Monday and went back to work on Thursday. I lift boxes that weigh about 5-10 lbs and walk about 10,000 steps a day and was just fine. I don't remember hurting. Just take off the time that you feel you need.

I work at a grocery store as a Checker, lifting 50 lb bags of Dog food and Kitty liter, not to mention cases of beer, soda and Water. I had my surgery 6/29/10 and Doc. has me off work until 7/26 for a total of 4 weeks.

Couldnt you just go back to work and tell them no lifting?

I had surgery on Thursday and went back to work on Monday. It's not too invasive and it actually felt better being up and around

Unfortunately no. My boss said I have to be 100% before I come back and Doc agreed. It's ok though, I am enjoying time off with my daughter who is on summer vacation.:)

Had op Friday AM and went back to work Monday. Thought nothing to it until did a sales road trip Thursday which flattened me and induced me to collapse in bed Friday. No problem since.

I do sweat like a pig - is that fat being burned or what?

Thanks guys! I appreciate it! I'll let you know how it goes. I work 7 days on/7 days off, so I'm technically not taking any extra time off of work. I'm confident Ill be fine now. Thank you again!:)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
