Post op stabbing pains near incisions...

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I was just banded on monday (July 12th) and I am experiencing some very sharp stabbing pains near a few of my incisions practically every time I move. I do know that with every surgery, pain is to be expected I was just wondering if anyone has any tips to sooth the pains in my stomach. I have been taking my prescribed pain medication but I feel like I need something else to calm the pains.

I am so excited to have finally begun my journey! I would just love it to be as comfortable as possible!

Thanks everyone!

You might want to try a heating pad. Sometimes that works for people. You might be experiencing some gas pains to. Try some Gas-X strips. Congratulations on your surgery and I hope that you feel better soon. Be sure to get up and walk as much as you can.

Hello! I was just banded July 16th and I have felt similar pains. Other than the pain meds I am taken FAITHFULLY, I find a LOT of relief to lay a cold pack on my incision sites. The hospital sent me home with several for the days ahead and they really do work! Hopefully by time this reaches you, you already have some relief :tt2:

I was just banded on July 8, 2010. I too, have experienced those sharp pains mainly near the incision at my naval and to my left side where my port is. I asked my doctor about it and they told me that is from where they stitch your port to your stomach muscle there and that's why when you move a certain way or use that muscle you feel that pain. I have also found that it worsens if I bend at the waist which I have been doing and I "know" that is one of the things we are not supposed to be doing post op. Ice packs did help me alot but, from what my doctors office told me...it is a fairly common thing that happens and tends to stay with you for quite some time. Good luck on your journey!! :tt2:

Thanks everyone for the tips! my pain is actually much better now. I have been wearing my very tight tank tops that I usually wear to suck my stomach in, but they help very much to avoid the stabbing pains. It has to do with the compression my surgeon told me. Congrats to you all and it looks like we are all going to be on this journey together!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
