Picture of defective port during surgery

Recommended Posts

This is my first time uploading a picture so I hope it works.

I just posted earlier about "Am I the only one that thinks this is a diet"

Here is the picture of my defective port.

The doctor even said that it wasn't a full seal on the port.

What you are seeing is the back of the port. This would have been placed toward my muscle not where we get our fills.

The red is just a little blood and the blue is the dye. He didn't want to take it out but was unable to find the leak with just saline because it was in the back.

It is said that this happens in only two percent of the people????? I guess I was one of the lucky ones.

Enjoy. I thought it was an intersting picture.

Is it uploaded onto the web anywhere? If so, you can just click the pictures of the mountains and put the URL to it.

I usually upload mine to my profile here and then link them.

The leak looks like it is right near one of those holes. Is there any chance he nicked the port with an instrument during installation?

I know everyone thinks there doctor is the best; but, I do have one of the best. But anything could happen.

If you could see the picture a little bigger you can see that there is a plastic seal all around the port and there is just not plastic there. Not like a nick, kind of like there was a gap in the plastic.

It reminds me of caulking and just a space where there was none.

Doc did send it back because he said it was a defect; but, I don't expect any response.

My thing is like with any manufactured product often there is a "lot" done. I sure hope there aren't a bunch of others out there. I have a feeling we will never know.

If your insurance covered it maybe they can help you pursue it further with the company. Sometimes they just need to be bothered a bit, especially with the trauma you have been through because of this! I say contact them.

I also had a leaking port. From the back of the port also, Dr. took a video as they injected saline you can clearly see saline leaking around the back seal. My Dr. told me he had several patients with the same issue, and that he thinks they are heading toward a product recall. He sent these leaking ports to Allergan for testing. I called Allergan myself and reported my issue. Initally, the person I spoke with tried to tell me how ports will leak when incorrect (non Huber) needles are used to access them. I told her my Dr's. name (he's on their advisory board) she says, "Oh". Then I ask why a port would leak on the BACK side when the needle is inserted in the front side. And BTW, I gained weight, had to go back on insulin, obviously my health suffered, I had to pay out of pocket to have my port replaced, missed several days work and I felt I should be compensated. A few days later, another Allergan rep called me and essentially said that my port was being tested and the results would go to my Dr., as the other ports he sent in. He said he understood I would like to be reimbursed for the cost of surgery and that he'd send me the paperwork they needed to proceed.

Hmmmm. Sounds like an admission of error to me. I'd like to speak to an attorney before I sign anything.

If you have an Allergan band, call them. I think this leaking port problem is bigger than we (or they) think.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
