What is YOUR Second Option for WLS?

Recommended Posts

Another member and I were briefly running this over through a PM...

IF something happened to our band, would we chose another weightloss surgery to continue our weightloss journey.

For me, I would. Not the GBP though, something else... but what? At this current weight, I wouldnt qualify for another surgery. So? What are the other options?

Im 30 pounds from original goal weight. If my band had to be removed, I wouldnt feel safe having another procedure at this weight - so do I gain 100 pounds to qualify? I cant imagine what this would do to my system!

My MIL had her stomach stapled 20 or so years ago. She still struggles here and there, always needing to lose 20 or 30ish pounds.

But she is healthy. And Happy!

No malnutrician. No worry of erosion. No reflux. No port flipping or band slipping. No problems with gas...

And this is 20 years later.

I know this is a lapband support group. But Ive been having problems of my own. So I cant offer very much lapband support right now :) .

I guess I just want to plan ahead. Cause any one of us could be the next Michelle or Trish or Jonathon or Darcey... and the list goes on.

And this stuff about trying to do it on my own (bandless) - nope, not me! I need a tool. I couldnt have done this with out something! (you go, Michelle - cause I know you can do it!)

So, what other option would you chose, if you had to face being bandless?

I'd like to know more about this gastric stimulator implant device thingy (to put it in techical terms). That sounds like a good Plan B for me, should I erode and lose my band. Well, that might be Plan C, and Plan B might be the VG band. I don't know of any erosions with that one. Does anyone else?

Oh, and no GP of any kind for me. I'm about 50 pounds from goal. I have lost 1/2 of my excess weight so far. I have lost 20 on my own and 30 with the band.

Can I just vent here for a sec?

I just wish the nagging would go away. It doesn't help that my tummy has felt funny these last days. I'm hoping it's psychosomatic! LOL But I had a tough meal on Friday...too dry, too rough, it was a grilled chicken with shrimp, rice pilaf, steamed broccoli that was still pretty raw, and I should have ordered some type of side of Pasta sauce for it and I might have fared better. I PB'd twice on that meal (I tried to eat the leftovers later, duh) then I had to do liquids for the rest of the day, then I PB'd Breakfast Saturday so I REALLY did liquids after that. Today is Sunday and I have eaten mushies, very soft foods all day and seem to be doing fine. Although as I left the restaurant after lunch today, my lower stomach felt spasm-y??? for a few minutes. Don't know what's up with that but it doesn't help my erosion paranoia. Ya know? KarenB posted about a Nutcracker esophogus, and that got me to thinking. I suppose it wouldn't hurt my band to take Prilosec twice a day for a week or two. Every burp, hiccup, fart, and twitch has me concerned. SIGH.

I don't know - I would try to be re-banded - except that I don't have the money to do so and who's to say the 2nd one would last either? I would also take a mighty interest in this new gastric pacemaker - never would I ever have gastric bypass or stapling - I like my organs just the way they are and I would choose to be a fatass for life before having my organs cut up and re-arranged.

If I was faced with losing my band, I guess I would look into the Duodenal Switch that Sue was talking about. I have looked at all the other options and I think that is the one for me. I don't like the aspect of it anymore than any of the other surgeries but I know me. I would gain all the weight I just lost and then some if I lost my band. I would need something. So the DS is for me.

Uhmmmm...that is a tough question...I been mulling it over ever since our beloved members have started having their band issues. I would honestly say that I would have to have something to aid me. The Gastric Shock Thingy(borrowing Kathy's highly technical term here) :-) would probably be my next option. No bypass for me...ever. However, having said that, if I could do it on my on, I wouldn't need the band....having said that though, I would also be hoping that if I lost my band, I would be far enough in my journey to have learned alot about myself, my eating habits and how to control them...or how to eat like a skinny person and no longer need the band...oh yes there's a fantasy if there ever was one...lol. ...ok take a breath. :-)

Band or nothing for me. If I'd tackled this problem 20 kgs ago I think I could have done it without the band, indeed I would have had to because I would have been merely overweight, not obese.

I know I need some help, mainly because the weight I have to lose - around 35kg is just so staggering to me, I cant see it happening. I cant get started, tomorrow never comes, I'm not good at deprivation, I'm a terrible dieter. During periods of my life when I've decided I"m never going to diet again, I've lost weight. Take away the obsession with not eating and I stop eating too much. Trouble is my weight problem is too big now for such an easy solution.

But I know I'm very good at avoiding gaining weight when I set my mind to it. I know my danger periods and I can avoid gaining. I went through an entire pregnancy and didnt gain weight due to nothing more than my own determination - and it didnt require horrible deprivation, it just involved everything in sensible portions.

I think if I lost the weight and then lost my band, I could keep the weight off. I've learned a huge lesson about not ignoring small gains and I've learned huge lessons about how much exercise helps my body to maintain a stable weight. I may be kidding myself but I'd give it a try, so I would definitely never ever consider gastric bypass surgery.

hi

Even though I am still fat after having struggled with the band for nearly 7 months now I would be to scared to do any other operation.....it is so bad to feel sick and in pain a lot of the time and if the "safest" operation can leave me desperate for relief and totally isolated in my pain, who says any other operation will be different?

If I know nothing would go wrong DPD/DS.Duodenal switch.....for sure....it seems to be a big operation and big success rate.....

I have no clue what I would do. Wire my mouth shut...but then I can picture myself trying to shove pizza up my nose.

I don't know.

OMG Eileen, you're too funny.

If the being rebanded was not an option, I think I'd first try to maintain what I've lost, then try to continue with my improved eating habits, (since banding), such as no bread, and very little red meat. I surely hope I don't have to make that decision any time soon.

Not sure what I'd do. Probably try to be rebanded. If that wasn't an option, then I'd definately turn back to full on vegetarianism, if not veganism.

I agree that I refuse to have my innerds rearranged, so any of the other surgeries are out for me. I would probably look into the gastric pacemaker thing too.

If banding wasn't an option for me, I doubt very likely that I would do any other surgery. I just don't want to mess with my insides in any shape or form.

I'll have the band or nothing at all. The other surgeries are just not right for me which is why I chose the band in the first place. If I am ever faced with the prospect of losing my band I may explore my rebanding options, or just try to maintain my banded weight loss.

This is me. I'd give it a year or two to see how I do bandless, and then if it's not working out I'd explore rebanding.

But I had a tough meal on Friday...too dry, too rough, it was a grilled chicken with shrimp, rice pilaf, steamed broccoli that was still pretty raw, and I should have ordered some type of side of Pasta sauce for it and I might have fared better. I completely sympathize with you!! I'm still feeling Thanksgiving leftovers from Saturday. :rolleyes Stay on liquids or mushies for another day to two, and I'll bet all will resolve. We have to remember that these rough meals take a toll that really has to be allowed to resolve; just because we're feeling OK at the next meal is NOT a license to do it again.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
