How long post-op (& how much weight loss) before you could 'see' changes in yourself?

Recommended Posts

Whillow has a great line in her signature here that reads "My "Oh yeah" moment when I *saw* the changes 2/12/2010". When was yours? Those close to me say they can see a difference now that I'm down almost 50 pounds, but I still don't see it. Wondering how it is for others who are further along post-banding.

I feel like I've been seeing the changes all along, even in the first month post-op. But, I also am doing a weightloss scrapbook. I do a page for every month w/pics and the printouts from my doctor's scale. Sometimes I write NSVs in there too and printout entries from my blog. I know it probably seems a little self-centered, but its fun to go through and remind myself how far I have come.

It was around 50-60 lbs lost for me to see any changes.

I've heard others refer to the 'magical' 60 pound milestone. Love adagray's response too that she's been aware of the cosmetic changes all along. That's something that I aspire to as being in touch with my body and body image was never something that came naturally to me, even when I was thin.

Up until about two weeks ago (50-60 lbs. lost) I still felt fat. Now I'm beginning to fit into regular size clothes, can cross my legs and just feel and look thinner. I still have a ways to go but I can definitely tell the difference.

It's funny, I don't notice when I look in the mirror but I do when I look at pictures and see the ongoing transformation. It's such a head game what we see in ourselves.

Best,

Lauren

Are you taking pictures of yourself occasionally? I found that the only way that I could see changes were to put my pictures next to each other. I couldn't really see the changes in myself. Now that I am down 100lbs I can of course see them but I honestly didn't start seeing the changes until I was about 70-80lbs down.

Like Lauren, I can't see it when I look in the mirror, but I can totally see it in photos.

When I lose (I've been up and down the 100+ loss path before), I have definite points along the way where it seems to jump out at me.

225-ish, 200-ish, 170-ish -- all are places where I can typically see a real difference.

The range between about 230 and 280 all seems about the same to my perception, though I can very much see a difference in photos between the two ends of that range, especially in my face.

Funny you should mention pictures. I had pics taken the day of my surgery and just had more taken yesterday - 2 1/2 months post-op. Still hard for me to see much of a difference, but my face does look a little thinner now.

You will notice more changes soon. That's where I noticed the biggest change was in the face. You are doing wonderful though. Remember any weightloss is better then what we were doing before. Keep up the great work.:scared2:

Thank you, that means a lot coming from somebody who just passed the 100 pounds lost milestone. Kudos to you!

Its kind of surreal, I saw them but I didnt. the same way as I knew I was fat but I didnt "see" it when I looked in the mirror. That awful moment when you suddenly see a picture of yourself without your blinders on!

I'd have to say though that the most gratifying and exciting part of the journey was the last 30lb, that's when the changes became really obvious to me. Every couple of pounds made a difference in my appearance and dress size.

Its why I'm just baffled when people set goals for themselves 20 lb above a healthy BMI, saying they look "better" at a higher weight. Logically I appreciate that's true for different body types but I cant help thinking that people are scared to see the real change so they stop before it happens. that last 30lb is the difference between remaining a fat (but not SO fat person) and really leaving the old you behind and I'm sure for some people, its fear of that that makes them set those higher goals.

Enough pop psychology, I'm making enormous assumptions about people based on what I believe which is not really right. But yeah, that last 30lb was what was most exiting for me, and it took that first 70lb to be gone before I could see the new me emerge.

Before that, I saw my body get smaller but it was still the same shape if you know what I mean. It was still a "fat" body just a smaller fat body. The last 30, all the flab dropped away, the bone structure and muscles emerged, I started to look entirely different.

I don't know whether you're right or not, Jacqui, but it does make a kind of sense.

This is the first time I've said that I WANT to get all the way into my ideal weight range. Every other time, I've stopped within 20-30 pounds of the top end of it, and then started gaining again.

This time, nope. I don't care if my family and in-laws say I look too skinny at 140-150#, which I know is what's going to happen. But I want to be slim, and fit, and NOT overweight at all for once in my adult life, and I want to stay there.

That's not to say I don't have some fears about getting there. I am not going to enjoy the negative comments from my family and in-laws. I don't actually like the heavy come-on attention I start getting from guys once I get below 200#. I'm nervous about the loose skin and saggy boobs. I worry about future potential complications with my band and whether or not I'll have foods that I can't eat forever.

But I've definitely made a mental shift to get here that hadn't occurred with any other time that I've lost weight. It feels very strange to be *this* determined about doing this, but it's a good feeling that's carried me through all of 2010 so far and hasn't let up yet!

Hey girl,

Long time no talk. I was wondering how you were doing eating wise. I remember once reading where you said eating a chore and not enjoyable anymore. I have had six fills and I think I'm at 8ccs. Since surgery in December I have only lost 35 pounds but I only had about 60 to lose so maybe that's normal. My question is: I cannot eat anything hardly. I mean there is NO way I could go out to eat with friends or family unless they knew my situation. I can't eat anything. AT my last fill I lost about 10 lbs in two weeks. Since then I've lost nothing. I think my body is holding on to my weight because it's starving. I try to eat bacon in the morning. It comes back up. I usually eat cottage cheese every day for lunch and dinner well it's just a few bites here and there of whatever I can get down. Are you THAT miserable too or am I too tight. I literally avoid going to any type of restaurant with anyone and even my 7 year old who does not know says... Mommy what is wrong... EAT! I think I may need a little out!

60 was magical for me. I saw changes before then--my measurements and size have steadily decreased from Day 1. But at 60, there was just a tremendous shift, both in the way I looked and the way I saw myself.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
