Ask your dietician what they will permit. Mine permitted frozen yogurt during week two when I moved from liquids to thick liquids/creams. I choose to eat Weight Watchers frozen strawberry smoothie bars to get my ice cream fix.

I don't know about your surgeon, but mine specified that I use only sugar-free popsicles, and limit myself to 2 a day.

Ice cream is not just like popsicles. It's loaded with sugar and fat, and requires a great deal more digestive activity.

Why do you want ice cream? You just had surgery to place a band around your stomach to reduce your food intake. Are you already looking for ways around the band?

I am not asking this to be mean--I'm asking because these are questions that you should look inside to answer. The band only takes care of one aspect of this process---the rest has to come from you.

I know that you're hungry now. But ice cream, while technically part of a (non-bariatric) full liquid diet, really is not suitable for a bariatric diet. Your body has a finite amount of space for food--make sure that what you give it has nutritional benefit.

At 9:45 at night when I used to snack Iwanted something sweet and that I had in the house that would fit the bill and not deviate far from my diet. I think I was a bit dehydrated very little Fluid yesterday. And the ice cream from a 100 cal mini ice cream sandwich seemed plausible and a better choice than the chip and dips I want and used to eat. I chose to go to bed. I haven't been very hungry and have been following my diet just had a weak moment and reached for support instead of the ice cream. I grocery shopped today and have stocked up on better Snacks and foods I can start on Thursday. I am so excited to chew something.

I can totally understand that. It's really hard when you're hungry. I can justify all kinds of things when my stomach is growling---including making ice cream a nice, hydrating liquid!

But you made a good choice by going to bed

It gets tons easier when you approach restriction--it really does. But until then, it's a good idea to get the tempting stuff that doesn't quite work for you out of the house.

I agree with you Betsy. If you want ice cream pick the good choices like weight watchers, skinny cow or try sugar free popsicles.

Being morbidly overweight we ate whatever we liked (genetics and everything aside) and that may be part of the problem we got where we are.

The band provides restriction, but we need to reprogram what food choices we make. Does it suck? sure, but the rewards will be great when we have our new body. And like anything else, our new food choices will be 2nd nature in about 6 months.

Throw out old food and replace it with light, fat free, sugar free, yogurt instead of ice cream. If the family doesn't like it, too bad, this is our new life we're eating healthy as a "family"! If the skinny people want ice cream let them go, you get a sugar free slushy drink and enjoy the day with them!

Sorry guys, not trying to be mean I'm also trying to reprogram the way I and my family lives and the food choices we make!

I'm so proud of you for the harder but good choices! Way to go!!!

I ate suger free fudge bars. I think they had like 60 calories per bar. They were just as much as a pudding. I ate them and had no issues and continued to lose weight. Truth be told i think you can eat whatever your band tells you is ok as long as it is in moderation. We are all different as you can tell by the posts as far as what we feel we can or cant eat.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
