I would not tell your office workers if you can get away with it. Let them be jealous of your youth and your weightloss all at the same time! They sound like they don't have your best interest at heart and I think that is the litmus test for deciding who to tell. It really is none of your boss' business either. You can tell him that you are having surgery, but he does not have to know the reason why. If he presses you - tell him it's female related...that's usually enough to get get men to stop asking questions :smile2:

You're right, it isn't any of his business, and maybe I will second guess that one. I will let him know of a medical issue that needs to be addressed. That's the truth, isn't it?!?!

I think my co-workers (ladies) would be supportive to my face, but then not be so nice behind my back. I don't know, they could surprise me. What we do have here is two severly obese people at work (we're talking like 450+ and 600+) and I think unfortunately they might get the spotlight focused on them to "go do what she did". Know what I mean? That's on them and I won't concern myself with their weight issues. I have my own to deal with! LOL

I fill the more people you tell, the more pressure on you. I only told my immediate family living in my home. You can always decide to tell more people in the future if you want, but you can't unring a bell.

I know how you feel, I haven't told everyone, just friends and co-workers. This is probably going to sound strange but I haven't told my parents and I have been banded since 8/2008. I love them but they have never been very supporting in the weight loss area.

A couple of years ago when I first started thinking about it, I let my mother know. I've made alot of lifestyle changes since then but she has no idea that I've started the process.

I just told my daughter and she thought it was cool. I have a few co-workers that know, one of them has already had hers done a year ago.

So what it comes down to is...the family really has no clue and we're getting ready to schedule my surgery. I think I'll tell my mother the week before she has to take me for the surgery,

Why haven't I told anyone? Don't want to be bothered with the questions!!!

I have recently started the process.....getting all the clearences need to be banded. I am very excited and have told a few folks. Most feedback has been positive, I have had some people say I didn't need it.....but they are not taking several insilin shots a day and meds for high blood pressure either. Yes I too get tired sometimes of educating folks, but the realization is, if my experiances can help someone else......then so be it. Won't yell from roof tops but will tell when asked or necessary.:)

I am so excited about this life change that I am making that I am telling everyone that I know who will listen to be anyway!

I just posted in my status message on Facebook that I have decided to do it, and how positive that I feel ever since I made the decision.

I am on disability right now, and all I did for the past 4 years is sit around and become a hermit. I never went out unless I had to, and that was even a struggle at times! A lot of the weight that I have now has been gained in those days.

I am now eating better, exersizing and my outlook on life is changing for the positive. I don't care what other people think, as I am doing this for me, and for my personal well being! I am on a journey towards a new life of being healthy!

I've only told family and 2 close friends who dont know each other at all. I refuse to tell my other four friends because they have never struggled with their weight and have made negative comments about people having the surgery. Also, i would have been completely annoyed with explaining it to them. That would have really drove me crazier than anything else. Ive been doing well hiding it from them so far. My inlaws are here right now so its perfect cause I haven't been able to hang out with them in this beginning phase of my banding where i can only eat soft foods.

This seems to be one of my hardest decisions right now, who to tell...I share the feelings of many of you who don't want to be judged OR have someone try to talk me out of the surgery. I know why I need it, but being a private person, don't really want to discuss those reasons with everyone. My husband and I will tell our children and our mothers. I can tell you right now that his mother will not be okay with it...she hates doctors and it only goes downhill from there.

I am open to the idea of telling people later on, when my weight loss is evident. I have a friend who was banded, and she has been very open to answering my questions. I'd like to pass that on to someone if the opportunity arises.

IMO- Tell as few people as possible. I told pretty much everyone and I'm sorry to say I regret it. It annoys me to to no end when I get comments about how much I have lost 'because' of the band. I pretty much had little to no restriction up until my last fill a week ago so the 60 lbs I have lost (so far :)) has all been MY hard work exercising & dieting. The only thing the band has done to this point is lead me to this site where I have received some great advice on eating properly until I get restriction and there after.

I got laid off from work the day I started my pre-op diet & just returned 2 weeks ago. Of course everyone asked how did I do it & I reply a lot of exercise & dieting, then I mention the word lap-band and I get a sighed "ohhhh". If I hadn't told so many I was doing it I would leave the surgery part out of the conversation but I assume they know, they just want to see what I'll say? I always feel the need to defend my hard work, maybe it's just me?

Anyhoot, my advice would be tell only those that truly love you and care about your health & well being and know of your struggles with your weight. Whomever you tell be prepared to educate them on all you know about the band because they will have 5 million questions, opinions and advice. Best of luck to us all!!!!!

... I seem to be fulfilling my destiny...I keep getting bigger. By choosing surgery I feel like I am trying to jump off a moving train headed for disaster. Part of me feels like I'm leaving my parents on the train, though. Maybe that's why I can't imagine telling them. I somehow feel I am betraying them by choosing a different path for myself....what an incredibly complicated mix of circumstances and emotions that have brought us all here.

Hey you! You know they would probably be elated, relieved and ecstatic you are are doing something with your weight as, as they sound so loving and caring, they would want only the best for you. And we all know how restrictive with life this weight issue can be!

I would have been in a totally different place if I'd been slim all my life - hobbies, friends, men work - it's sad but this shifted sense of 'disabled normality' that comes to be our lives; is a life with subconscious 'ooh can't do this/ that cos I'm too big' attitude which gets introdden in day-to-day... the alter life with 'what could have been's is pointless.... We are all still here though - so pat on your back for TRYING to change this 'normality status' for the better. Cos it is restrictive.

As for telling peeps about the band?

I will not keep it a secret if asked - but I won't shout otherwise.

I nearly kept it secret - ashamed for not being able to sort it out with pure diets - but no: I read someone's blog and he was right!:

Weight - but more importantly my 'treat/ food' process has been my private/ hurtful/ comforting companion all my life; to keep this op secret on top of my habits have been would add to to my wierdness and therefore let my companion win through the secrecy factor. In other words: I'm halting a vicious circle - plus when friends say 'how are you doing' re the band - I can honestly talk about it - something I was never asked or able to talk about when getting fatter!!!

Love to you all - lets shed these shells and let the world see what we knew all along... xxx

I am, personally, not planning to tell anyone besides my husband as he is the one taking me to the hospital. Not even the kids. No one needs to know. And this is no ones business why I am losing the weight. I am losing and this is what matters nothing else.

I haven't been banded yet but I have been telling ppl that I've been considering it...Big mistake. Not everyone is being supportive. It hurts a little so I've decided to stop talking about it and just do it. When I at my goal weight if they ask then I will share.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
