Did anyone else's doctor have a pre-operative class?

I was just wondering if it was something that all doctors do. I had to attend a mandatory 2 hour pre-op class. There were 5 other patients that are being banded in the next few weeks. We were given a binder full of information. It covered pre-op diet instructions, what to expect on the day of surgery, post op instructions, info on Vitamins and supplements, sample menus for the different post-op diet stages, a list of do's and dont's and a much much more. We were also given samples of the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury flavored Protein powder, Bariatric Advantage Vitamins, EAS Protein shakes and 2 different kinds of Protein Water.

The class was awesome and I feel totally ready. May 21st can't get here fast enough.

My class was about the same. It was suppose to be 3 hours, but ended up almost 4 hours. I learned a lot though and was glad they had the class. I don't know if every Dr. requires the class, but it's a very good idea.

I have the class scheduled for Friday. Thanks for letting me know what I'm in for. My doctor wouldn't say too much; guess he really wants me to attend. He said it's a requirement of the medical insurance. He gave me the binder last week when he told me to start the pre-op diet and said to bring it with me to class.

Surgery is scheduled for Tuesday the 11th. I'm pretty excited! Sure hope this class is closer to 2 hours than 4!

Yes, my doctor required one too. It was taught by the nurse coordinator of the program. There were 7 of us in the class, all having surgery the same week. We each had an individual time where our weight was recorded, pictures were taken, and we had the opportunity to ask any question we would not want to ask in a group setting. After that we were all given folders that we filled up as the class went on. I really did learn a lot. Mine was about 3 hours...hope this helps.

My pre-op class was very similar to yours, and very helpful. The only thing I would have changed would have been more direct about what to expect after surgery re: the possibility of Bandster Hell and how to deal with it if it does occur, so people won't be surprised.

I had a class that lasted over 5 hours. It was our second informational class. I felt prepared enough but I think this site has given me a lot more insight.

One of my friend had Pre-Operative Class for one week. It's mandatory to everyone who wants to get banded.

I have to go to a 2-hour class next Tuesday before my surgery on the 17th. I also have to get blood work, an upper GI, chest x-ray, bilateral venous doppler, gall bladder ultrasound, an EKG and a PFT. WOW!!!! Are all of these tests pretty normal? I am in good health (except for the extra weight!). I was a bit freaked out when I got my schedule for Tuesday. It is a full 9 hour day of testing!

Now that the reality of having the surgery is here, I am getting a major case of the jitters!

My doctor handles nutrition education the same way. We have a class and are given a CD-ROM with more detailed information for reference.

He also has follow-up classes after surgery. All are taught by the nurse coordinator, though the dietitian has had cameos.

I have a six hour class scheduled for two weeks prior to my surgery. I then have a 3 hour class one week post op. I have no idea what to expect but I loved reading what everyone else learned.

Hey, I'll be at St. Agnes too!! My Dr. is Kuldeep Singh, though, and I'm getting banded on 5/25 :)

Dr. Singh has a pre-op class too, and now thanks to your description I'm REALLY looking forward to it. Still trying to get myself ready for my pre-op diet, which I start on Tuesday (alllllllllll liquiiiiiiiiiiiiids :o) and started taking vitamins and Biotin and B12 already too.

I can't wait!!

Blessings, and hopefully we can keep in touch since we're in the same area. Sort of

Do you go to the office at Geipe Rd? There is another bariatric surgeon that works out of the same office, but I never bothered to look at his name:confused:

So you have to do a two week liquid diet? I thought that Dr. Von Reuden decided on a case by case basis, but the instructions were the same to everyone in my class and we were all different ages and sizes. We are only required to do Clear liquids the day before surgery. I am contemplating whether or not I will voluntarily put myself on a liquid diet to jump start my weight loss because I didn't really lose weight during my 6 month supervised diet.

Well good luck and we should keep in touch.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
