I won't be successful if I have a sweet tooth?

I just read on the internet that if you have a sweet tooth, the doctor could tell you that he won't do the surgery because you won't be successful.

Does anyone believe that? I'm quite surprised about that statement. I have a sweet tooth, but because I'm forever on the diet wagon, I don't indulge in sweets. I maybe have something like a cookie or whatever maybe once per week. I was on Atkins for almost 2 years and never had anything sweet, in fact the taste of sugar was horrible after not having it.

So do you think it's true that someone who likes sweets will fail?

No I don't think that is true in the least. I have a sweet tooth and have lost over 40 pounds, 25 of it since I had my band. Dr. B never asked me a thing about whether I had a sweet tooth or not prior to my surgery. He did verify that I knew what my food levels would be post band, but that was it. I have sweets just in moderation. I had been a baking mood lately and had one too many peices of my own cake, so I confronted it, dealt with it and moved on. With the band, I have to be accountable alot quicker than I would pre-band. Hope this helps.

I have a big sweet tooth, and I believe in indulging it often. I don't want to live in a world without chocolate. The difference is, now I eat 1 or 2 Cookies instead of 12. I've been very successful with my weight loss. I'm not saying I won't have to buckle down a little when I start to plateau, but I think one of the great things about the band is our ability to eat everything, so long as it is consumed in moderation.

The fact of the matter is, sweet tooth or not, having a band makes it easier to resist inappropriate amounts of food. Whatever the food is, if you eat less of it you will do better at losing weight. And not being hungry makes that easier.

It is possible to eat around the band, of course, and if someone is obsessed with sweets they may be more inclined to do that. But now we're talking about eating disorders, not your run-of-the-mill sweet tooth. If you've been able to moderate your intake of sweets just by telling yourself you're on a diet, you'll be a great success as a bandster!

I definitely have a sweet tooth. I'm plugging along ok. I am definitely mindful of not over indulging in sweets. for me it's chocolate! I had to send the halloween chandy with DH to work, it was a killer.

I read this idea in some of the literature I got with the band, but I just passed it by and didn't give it any credibility. My dr. did tell me about someone who drank cake batter, but I think that might be under the heading of eating disorder...like Anwyn says, I still eat chocolate, but not a whole bag! That's a big improvement, right? The band is what you make it (under most circumstances!). You will succeed or fail based on how you work with this tool. Don't let that warning get to you! Cindy

You can still be successfull! I've lost 27lbs since i got banded in August, and i will have an occasional treat. I piece of halloween candy here, a cookie there. Like others said when your properly restricted you can't eat more then 1 or 2 Cookies anyways. I think if you ate sweets day in and out, then no you won't be successful, but an occasional treat certainly won't make you fail.

Thank you everyone! That's reassuring. I think by having the "tool" to help me lose, I will be more diligent and stick with the guidelines. I'm afraid I won't lose any weight. I am the person at my work who says no to bagel and donuts and Cookies when they are sitting right behind me on a counter. Other girls, who are doing Weight Watchers, eat that stuff daily and then come to me and say, I lost 4 lbs this week! (I actually told one girl that I joke around with a lot, that I wanted to kick her ass, so she stuck it out and I kicked it!) I stick to the plan I'm doing and I don't lose anything. That's why I'm afraid the same thing will happen with the band.

I have noticed though that if my calorie consumption is below 1,000 cals, I lose. I wonder if I just have a tendency to only lose on low calories. Oh whatever........

I'm going to make some calls to a surgeons office today and my insurance company....get the ball rolling!

I have a sweet tooth and the doctors didn't ask me anything regarding it. They just send you to a nutritionalist to discuss your eating and what you will be eating.

All the same I'd hate to be a real chocoholic or ice cream addict. But geez, sweet tooth? Who doesnt have a sweet tooth, lol.

And I thought the whole point of the band was a normal and varied diet in modest portions? I honestly dont see the point of getting a band only to live a life on some crackpot diet or denying yourself everything.

I have a mouthful of sweet teeth, no nutritionist, no counselors, and no will power. Thanks to the band, I'm succeeding anyway. Will power can't outwit restriction, so though I can still have some sweets, there are many I just can't eat. That's pretty helpful over all. Those that I can still eat, I just try to avoid when I can, and enjoy when I can't, because eventually the band stops me, even on the stuff that goes right down.

I'm down 91 pounds... even if I never lose another, I'm in wayyyy better shape than I was prebanding.

I don't even know of any doctors who would ask this question to begin with. Who told you that? Just sounds like someone who is trying to make excuses not to get banded to me, or someone who doesn't want you to get banded.

If you took a poll on this site as to how many of us are sweets lovers, you'd probably darn near get a reply from every single member and there would only be a handful of members who really don't care for sweets(though why they don't is a curious attitude I must say).

No way could that be true, IMHO.

I don't beleive it's treu, I have a very big sweet tooth, I drink starbucks, and haved smll amounts of chocolates, I have lost 67lbs I had my surgery Oct 23 2005.

I don't have a sweet tooth, but when I do feel like chocolate (or whatever the sweet culprit may be .. mmmm cheesecake!!), I definitely indulge. Instead of a whole piece of cake or whatever, I now have a few bites and that's more than enough.

The band is a tool - you still have to put in a good bit of work and learn to say "that's enough for me" occasionally. But its well worth it.

Does having Oreos soaked in milk for dinner count as a sweet tooth? Having a small sandwich at a birthday party so I can eat 4 pieces of cake a sweet tooth?

Hell yeahhhhhhhhhhh I had a sweet tooth. No more with the band! I don't have an intolerance to sugar or anything but I definitely don't overdo the sweets. You only have so much room in there and when you pile on the sugar it makes you feel a bit nauseated.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
