Getting things "moving" - a delicate ?

Recommended Posts

Sorry to be so indelicate, but I'm struggling a bit......had serg on Monday the 19th....was required to do the full Milk o' mag cleanse so was "empty" on Monday. Its now Sunday, so a full week later and nothing...just some gas. However, it feels like I need to "go", but nothing...very crampy and uncomfortable. What can/should I do? How long does it normally take to get things "moving" again? I've been adding a spoon of Benefiber to my shakes the last couple of days and have made sure to do some walking everyday....now trying a bit of coffee.....HELP!

My surgery was 19th also and I was told to talk a stool softener in the morning and then again in the evening. I was also told to call if I hadn't had a bowel movement in 2 or 3 days after I got home. I would say that it was about day 3 or 4 days before anything happened! I hope this helps!

Try Miralax. It's helps relieve Constipation without some of the painful gastric side effects of other laxatives or stool softeners. My doc recommended it for me shortly after I had surgery and it worked well. It's flavorless and not bulky, so you can mix in w/ Water , crystal lite, etc.

Best,

Lauren

After day 3 of not having a BM, I was a bit worried. I felt like I needed to go, but could not push, it hurt too much in my muscles. So i went and got a kids laxative, chewable tablet. It said 2-4 tablets the first time. I only took 2. That did the trick! But then I had diareaha for a couple days! I was kinda wondering why I was even having BMs if I was on liquids! Weird! Finally the "runs" went away on their own and now I am normal. Luckily my insides are healed up more and can deal with the pushing... to an extent. I think I might try that Miralax too, because it is not always easy.

My surgeon suggested using Milk of Magnesium if I had not had a BM within 4 days. I used it, but didn't feel like it did much. I felt like the Gas Z chewables I was taking were more effective for that.

I used BeneFiber twice a day for about the first 6 weeks and then i was fine. I think its your body getting used to the drastic change in diet.

Seems to be a common thing to happen

honestly i'm 3 weeks out and i've yet to be "normal". i've taken a stool softener once in a while, but with limited results. i'm getting more used to it, unless it becomes uncomfortable, but i know it isn't hurting me.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
