Carb issues?

Recommended Posts

I got another fill last week and since then I've been having some real troubles keeping food down. Let me clarify... I've been having trouble keeping carbs down. The things that didn't bother me before this fill (I have 4cc in a 10cc band) are making me pb like crazy. Tortillas, well chewed chips (I know, bad), and even the courser breading on meat. I've never had a problem with this before but let me tell you after three days in a row and every meal with any breadish type item causes me issues.

I've read all over about people choosing to be low carb. I'm just not happy that this is being a forced issue. Any tips to try and keep even just a few bites down? Or should I just accept what my band is telling me and morn the loss?

Hmmm, well I'm certainly no expert but in my pre-surgery information, the surgeons and providers told us that its likely we would never tolerate white flour again. They went on to elaborate, things made with white flour have a difficult time passing through. And sure enough, I was banded on 2/24 and since then I have been unable to eat tortillas, bread, and some pastas. I am sad to see those things go, but definitely will trade my future for some awesome Pasta.

You may just have to keep experimenting to find what works. For example, I have trouble with white bread and thicker pastas. I can't eat ravioli, but I can eat macaroni. I can even eat spaghetti, but when I eat it, I use a little Pasta and extra sauce with lot of meat. As far as bread goes, I can do harder breads. I can even do a sandwich with a roll, if there is a lot of meat in the sandwich. For me, it seems that the key is having a variety of textures in my meal. Then the soft bread doesn't just stick together and gum up the works. I really can eat almost anything.

All of those things you mentioned often give me problems too. I never had a problem with them until I hit my sweet spot, so for me at least, I think it has much more to do with the level of restriction rather than carbs. I haven't sworn them off completely, as once in a while I can tolerate them, but I stay away most of the time for the comfort and safety of my band.

No white carbs for me, but beleave it or not you get use to it. I'm a southern girl and we grew up on carbs and starches. I could give you a mile long list of good ole southern comfort foods that are now off the menu but don't want to cause any drooling:drool: I no longer miss them and I still cook them almost every night for my DH, They just don't appeal to me anymore. You'll be just fine once you come to except that it's just not part of your life now and remember the old saying: Nothing taste as good as skinny feels!!! I must admit I still endulge on a little chocolate every now and again. But beleave it's ok to treat yourself sometimes as long as you follow the rules 99% of the time that 1% won"t hurt you.

Well said Kimaly. It is so worth giving up the bread and Pasta every time that scale goes down another pound.

For me, it depends on the day and the time of day. Definitely in the morning I can't eat breads, and usually just a little of it at any other time of the day. I agree with the poster that said as long as it is with something else, like a lot of sauce with Pasta it is "ok", but I still can't eat much of it. But a taste of it usually is all I need.

For me, it is a good things because I have historically been addicted to carbs. I would love to eat a lot of breads and pastas, etc. Now it just doesn't matter anymore, mostly because I don't get that same "feel good" feeling that I did, its a negative feeling now so it doesn't matter. I am so glad I no longer feel controlled by them. That in itself made the band worth it!

My tell tale sign that something isn't going down well is I gurgle, and I gurgle LOUD. I don't get to the point of PB'ing anymore though, I have learned the signs to stop when I'm ahead.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
