I have been reading about the pre and post surgery liquid diet so to speak, I have not meet with the dietition yet that is the 16th of April. so you mean to tell me you have to puree your food after the surgery and how long do you have to do that. and what about this protien drinking thing how long do you do that before the surgery and after.?

sorry for all the questions but I was wondering.

Thanks again for all your support this site is greatl.

Welcome and congrats on starting your journey. With regards to your questions, the best answer is that every doctor is different and you are going to have to wait to see what yours requires... Sorry. I know that's not the answer you wanted. The only real consensus among all doctors is the importance of protein!

Pre-op diets are high Protein and low carb. They tend to range from not required at all to 3 weeks in duration. They serve to shrink your liver and typically either consist of all-liquids (protein drinks, broth, jello) or liquids with a dinner of 4oz protein and veggies.

Post-op diets come in phases/stages. You start with liquids, advance to mushy foods (which is where you could puree your foods, eat baby food, or stick with naturally mushy foods like eggs, tuna, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes, etc), advance to soft foods, and then slowly begin re-introducing foods of "normal" consistency that require more chewing.

Hope this helps and good luck on your journey.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
