What was your "That's it" Moment?

Recommended Posts

I had been toying with getting the band for about a year and was doing half-hearted research and such for a while. Last June I had a BBQ for my friends from school and of course we took pics. I put them on my snap-fish account. I was scrolling through the thumb-nail sized pics and came across a picture of a very round person and said to myself "Who is that round roly-poly?". Imagine my horror when I enlarged the pic and saw it was me! Now, I knew I was faaaat, but had never seen the way my body had become round all the way around.. and that folks was my "THAT"S IT" moment!

Consult in July, Surgery in October and down about 35 lbs. today!

I went to Rochesters Big and Tall and I barley fit in their largest suit, size 60 coat. When you out grow the fattest clothes at the fat store...it is time.

When I was talking about my athletic career (way back when) and I could see that people couldn't even conceive of me in that way. I was a fabulous athlete. I swear! Although that was a lifetime ago. That was one. The other was when I was on a bus (NYC public bus) with my three kids and a woman told me to get up because I was taking up more than one seat. She was an idiot and there were plenty of seats on the bus, but I didn't want me girls to hear that sort of thing, right or wrong.

I had a similar "That's it" moment, when I took my kids to the amusement park and was not able to ride any of the rides because i didn't fit in the seats with all the safety belts and bars they've got on those things now....That and when we got home I was already a bit upset with myself and then I looked at some of the pics my wife took and had the same reaction to my pictures...That was it for me, I knew I had to do something...

Mine was due to my knees. I had been having shots under the knee caps every 6 mos for a couple years, all due to arthritis which was ugly due to my weight. The shots were a series of 3 shots each 1 week apart. The last series I had caused my leg to swell up so bad I could not walk for 2 days, that scared the pants off of me. About the same time a friend mentioned that she just found our our insurance covered obesity surgery.. The wheels started turning and I made my decision pretty quickly. I am down 60 lbs and have not had a shot in my knee in over a year. I am taking 1/2 my arthritis medicine and think with another 20 lbs I can do down to occasional aleve as needed.

I have only been overweight for 5 years, but I knew I had a problem with food ever since I graduated high school and quit playing sports. I also have to be a bridesmaid in my cousin's October wedding :frown:. I want to look better than I did at my brother's wedding a couple years back.

Thanks for sharing. I know there is never '1' thing that prompts such a step, but was curious as to how people arrived at their decision.

I had been researching WLS for a few years but it was a midlife crisis with my 45th birthday approaching that prompted me to get the process started.

Exactly a week after my first consult, I had a couple of "minor" heart attacks and that point I knew it was the right decision at the right time.

I've had quite of few of the looking at pics and thinking omg who is that whale....oh wait that's me!!! I have often said I have reverse anorexia.....I look in the mirror and think I look great!!!! I didn't have a lot of motivation, I have a man who adores me at any size, awesome kids, great friends, and a lifestyle that wouldn't need me to thin and my Dr once said I was the healthiest fat person he cared for. And then I was able to check off two things off my "bucket list" go to New Orleans and go to Vegas.......both were fantastic trips that I know would have been mindblowing if I were in better shape physically to keep up........that was my ok That's it.....I'm doing it!!!!

And I can't wait to go back

Mine has been gradual rather than a single "Aha!" moment; at this point it is mainly health, though vanity plays some part. I'm just sick of being fat and all that comes with it- self-esteem issues, embarrassment, being so out of shape, etc., etc., etc....Ugh!!!!

A cousin of mine came to visit. I hadn't seen her in a year and instead of her usual fat self, she looked fantastic. She was at a perfect, healthy weight. She'd been banded. I had always said WLS was not for me. But now I began to seriously consider the possibility. My cousin is 8 years younger than me and I thought of what it would have been like to lived the last eight years looking and feeling my best. My husband and I soon left on a long vacation and I spent all of that time deciding if I should have the surgery. In the end I had to honestly say that I could lose the weight on my own, but I had no confidence I would ever keep it off. When I got home I began my 6 month insurance required supervised diet. I am 2 months post-op and thrilled with my decision.

I had just regained all the weight it took me 2.5 years on Weight Watchers to lose. For all the effort and time it took me to lose that weight, the most I ever lost was 50 pounds. And, I gained it all back in about 10 months. My scale hit my WW starting weight the same month (December '08) that was my mom's bandiversary and I found out she had lost 100 pounds.

I immediately started researching my medical coverage, surgeons, went to a seminar, requesting all my old medical records for insurance. During '09, I did the 6 month diet required by my insurance and was denied twice.

By the second denial, I had pretty much decided to wait until January '10 because the only thing holding me back from meeting their criteria is because I fell below the needed BMI when I had been on WW.

Then, in October of '09 my doctor put me on meds for high cholesterol and I was told I was prediabetic. This is all on top of having chronic high bp and sleep apnea. I felt like my body was falling apart and I couldn't wait it out until January. So, I wrote a second appeal and this one was approved. Woohoo!!!

I called my surgeon's office to get scheduled and when they called me back, they gave me my surgery date which would be December 17, 2009 (my mom had her surgery on December 17, 2007 so exactly two years after my mom). I'm following in good footsteps.

BTW, my surgeon stopped taking Aetna as of this January. I am so so glad I pushed through and got the surgery last year!!!

My ah ha that's it moment: I was leaning against the wall at work waiting on the restroom when an individual who worked in a similar area came up and said "being pregnant sucks, you have to go alllllll the time" I looked at her to see how far along she was and to my suprise.....she was talking about me!!!! I politely replied 'I wouldn't know'. She tried to apologize but I was so offended that I just went into the restroom an cried! I was hurt, embarassed and pissed all at the same time!! =[ that was it for me!!!!!

Mine was after I trained 12 weeks and ran a half marathon and weighed more than I did when I started training - for the third time in a year.

I finally got the picture that intake was the problem rather than the output.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
