spironalactone and hair loss

Recommended Posts

So i have been researching Hair loss in general and came across something very interesting to me. I have been losing my hair which started about 3 years ago. I used to have long luxurious hair and had to cut it all off due to it becoming thin. I was banded on DEC 28th, 2009 and I know it has gotten worse. I use the Shampoo, get enough Protein, and take my Vitamins, but still having hair loss. HAS ANYONE BEEN TAKEN SPIRONALACTONE FOR HAIR LOSS. It has steroid properties which are shown to reduce hair loss. It is a diuretic, but its side effect has been shown to slow down hair loss....Hmmmmm...The hair revive vitamins aren't working and all my tests are coming back NML.....Any thoughts on this......thanks....onenuttynurse:glare:

So far, I have used Biotin which has helped somewhat in high doses but not completely. I'd be happy to try anything else.

From what I understand, spironolactone is used for hair loss in women with androgen excess. I don't believe that is a problem for most who lose hair post WLS; in our case, it's a complex combo of the trauma of surgery, (sometimes) Protein deficiency, and (sometimes) Vitamin deficiency.

The one thing that is pretty universally agreed-upon is that getting adequate Protein can help hold the loss at bay (and promote regrowth when loss occurs). I don't know about your doctor, but mine recommends 65 g/day. From what I've read, 85-100 is more effective for preventing the loss in those of us for whom loss can be prevented.

I aim for 100 g/day. My weight loss is still good, but so far, my hair is intact. (Of course, I'm way earlier in the game than you are....I may yet be treated to gobs in my shower drain.)

I would check to see if the "steroid properties" slow down or stop weight loss, but understand how scary it is losing your hair..... Hugs!!!

One of the steroid properties that I would view as at least a relative contraindication is the increased incidence of gastric ulceration in patients using spironolactone.

My Hair loss strarted way before the banding, so thats why i am looking into this. I am drowning in Protein, exercise daily, takes Vitamins faithfully and it is still coming out in handfulls...thats why i am looking into whether spironalactone is my ticket......I think the androgen excess if my problem...will find out soon...

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
