What are your doctor's rules for after a fill?

Recommended Posts

And, do you follow them???

I'm just curious because my doctor seems to be on the extreme side. I am only supposed to have Clear Liquids for 72 hours after a fill. And, she limits 'clear liquids' to tea, broth, sf Jello, Protein shots, and Water. That is it! For 72 hours!!! :mad2:

To her credit, I have never swelled shut or had any bad post-fill experiences... other than the starvation!!!

But, I find it the one 'rule' that I just can't bring myself to follow. I've had three fills so far. With each one, I'm able to go a bit longer on just these clear liquids, but I never make it the full 72 hours. I ALWAYS stick to the Clear Liquids for at least 24 hours, though, and when I progress, I take it slow... first Soup, then yogurt, then cottage cheese.

So, as I am on my 2nd day of clear liquids again after my 3rd fill and I have lots of time on my hands cause I'm NOT eating, I'm just curious what everyone else's rules are for after a fill and if you follow them?

Wow - that does sound extreme...but every doctor's approach is different. My doctor is opposite of yours -- he wants me back on regular foods as quickly as possible because he is afraid of liquid and slider foods being too easy to consume and not filling up the pouch so may take in more. (Not sure if I agree with that -- you can only take in so many Protein shakes!)

I had a fill yesterday and he had me do liquids for the rest of the day, then soft foods today and back to regular food by tomorrow.

But again...all docs are different and I can see pros and cons to both philosophies.

I do believe that it is IMPERATIVE that you follow your surgeon's rules to the letter. If you have chosen a good surgeon that has plenty of experience, then they will know what works and was does not work for THEIR patients. Every doctor has different rules, but every Doctor has a different level of experience and probably performs the surgery just a little differently than other surgeons.

If you have done your homework on your surgeon, then you should be able to TRUST him or her, and follow their instructions.

My doctor has me on 2 days clear liquid and 2 days full liquid. I have to admit, that after the fill, I count that as day 1, then the next day is day 2.

My doctor says soft foods for 24 hrs. Then regular foods. But with this 3rd fill I am still on soft foods 4 days later because I cant get any solids down yet. But the weight is coming off now!

Whatever I can tolerate. They told me to try mushies first and work my way up but no set plan. Good luck!

I got my first fill yesterday and was told to go back to liquid diet for 24 hours then back to whatever phase diet I am on after that. I have been SO hungry today. Way more hungry than before the fill!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
