I was told between 50 and 60. I never realized how hard that would be until I started trying to get that much! I'm doing 2 Atkins Protein Shakes a day, and 1 Muscle Milk after my nightly work out. I also have a scrambled egg for Breakfast, so that helps.

There is no difference between pre-op and post-op requirements.

Women require 50 grams a day and men 63.

I have never heard anybody say there a was a max before.

Here is how my nutritionist and doctors office does it.

Daily Protein is based on a formula of (1.2-1.5) grams of Protein per kilogram Ideal Body Weight(appropriate)

My protein range given to me as I left the hospital 70 - 87gm daily

The nutritionist at the pre-op class yesterday told us it was very important to have 60 grams for post op. She did not give an amount for the 2 week pre-op.

dumb question - but how do u know types of Protein to take or how much protein is in a food that doesn't break down the protein content on the label?

In Canada we only have 1 meeting with a dietician...the day before surgery!

In Canada we only have 1 meeting with a dietician...the day before surgery!

The way my dietician explained this to me was that for every 2 grams of carbs you have, you MUST have at least 1 gram of protein to break it down. So if you choose a Protein Bar that has 20 carbs, you need to have AT LEAST 10 grams of protein. Of course, that's the minimum....my dietician really urged me to try for more Proteins if I could. I use the Atkins Protein Bars and that seems to work out great for me. Hope this helps. :scared2:

Oh - just reread your question and I misunderstood what you were asking. I bought a book at Books-a-Million that breaks down all the calories, fat, carbs and Proteins for me. So I don't have to worry if my label doesn't have it, which btw is rare. :)

I just added up the grams of Protein I'm getting on the liquid diet that I've been put on, 44 grams a day. It's not enough but I'm afraid to add anymore Protein because I need to lose weight or the surgery is going to be postponed.

Any suggestions?

Drasan,

The nutritionist told us at the seminar to have the (2) high Protein drinks daily or Meal Replacement bar, a sensible dinner to include 4 ozs of lean meat and 2 veggies. Avoid starchy veggies such as corn, peas, potatoes, sweet potatoes. Two Snacks would incl. light yogurt or small fruit or FF cottage cheese. She says we should lose weight by following the above.

Hope this helps.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
