To Weigh or Not to Weigh?

Recommended Posts

That is the question. From reading on the boards, many newly banded patients are not supposed to weigh themselves because of the possibility of no weight being lost. My doctor wants us to weigh every day. Apparently, gaining weight after surgery can be an indication that your body is having problems passing waste. What do you guys do? I've been weighing daily on my Wii Fit so I can have an electronic record of my weight.

I weigh myself once a week. If I did it more often the flucuations in weight that happen would drive me crazy. However, if your doctor reccomends every day for now I guess you should do it. I was not told that.

My doctor didn't mention to weigh every day OR not to.... I guess it makes sense though... I'd do what your doctor recommends and if you have questions about it, then call him or her.

FWIW, I am two days post-op and I got on the scale this morning. Couldn't help it.

My doctor has me weigh every day. I've been doing it from day one, and it keeps me accountable. I also have to keep a daily weight loss diary. He goes over it with me at each appointment. It works very well for me. But I am one of those people who thrives on rules.

I think it boils down to "can you handle the truth". If seeing your weight go up a couple of pounds in one day and down a couple of pounds the next without freaking out, then weigh every day.

If you will get depressed if the scale ever says more now then the last time, then only weigh once a week.

If you expect the scale to ALWAYS go down, you are not facing the reality that Water weight will affect you. Your weight is a range, not a number. Accept that your weight can fluctuate 2% or so but that as a trend, it will go down.

I, for one, weigh several times a day. My trend is down. But last week I saw my range be 11 pounds from 299 to 310. Today, I was 298. Go figure.

Pick a day off the week and make that your weigh in day. You can weigh in every day or every other day if you like. Just wright it down and count it once a week. I weigh in on wed. because it mid week and if you had a little extra during the weekend you have a few days to work it off. I started Nov 09 at lbs and last Wed. Feb Th I weighed in at 272 lbs. I also chose Wed. because that is the day I see my Doc. and weigh in with him. I weigh in at home then at his office and to see if my scale is correct. Look for 1 to 2 pounds a week. I have been very lucky I only work out 2 times a week and have had great success with only 1 small 4 cc fill. I know it may not be that easy for everyone put stay focused. I think that I hit my sweet spot just after the first fill. If you weigh in every day you will drive your self crazy always remember calories in calories out. Keep a journal of what you eat every day.

Good Luck

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
