St. Louis - Need a Mentor or Support Group

Recommended Posts

Greetings Bandsters,

I know that this isn't the place to post region-specific requests, but the regional boards seem to be essentially dead. I'm in St. Louis and could really use a LB mentor, partner, or support group. I called my doctor's office today and they told me they don't have anything/anyone in my general vicinity. I found this quite surprising - but I guess I've got to work with what I've got. SO - if there are any of you out there in St. Louis City or nearby who would be open to meeting, mentoring, or helping each other out on our journeys, I'd love to hear from you!

Thanks! :tongue_smilie:

Sorry, I'm not local. I hope you can find a local support group or mentor. Keep in mind that if you do find a general WLS support group, band patients have very different experiences that bypass patients. You can't compare your weight loss to theirs. We achieve about the same results at year 3 and beyond, but they lose much faster at first and have very different issues (sorry if u know this already).

You can use those of us on these boards who've been banded years ago for on-line support. Studies show that people who actively track their progress and use on-line support achieve better results than not actively involved in some form of support program.

Hey there!! I'm in St. Louis. I actually went to Dr. Wagner in South County and he's affiliated with the St. Alexius New Start Program. The program is awesome in that they offer tons of classes and support group meetings. I am not sure what you need to do to join, but you can call 314-865-7000 and ask for the New Start Program. Tell them that Letitia Referred you. It's an awesome experience. I am going to attend the class they have next Monday @9:00 AM. Its about how to make smaller nutritious and satisfying portions. Contact me anytime...send me a personal message or anything...I'd love to have a support partner too.

I was banded on 02/08/10

Hello, I'm in Alton, Illinois but drive over to St. Louis for my fills to the SSM Weight-Loss Institite in Bridgeton Mo at DePaul Hospital. They have two different support groups theres one for bandsters and one for gastric bypass patients they have monthly meetings I've heard they are very helpful the number is 1-314-344-6800. I would love to attend one of the support groups just been really busy.

I'm in St. Louis too and would love to be a mentor for someone--although I'm about a year out, I could provide support from someone who's "been there". I'm located close to 141 and 44...I also went to Dr Wagner, but have never attended any of the support groups--I get the support I need at home and on these boards! but I have loved my journey, am willing to share anything and can always lend an ear.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
