Recommendations for Post Op Diet

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I'm getting ready to be banded on March 4th -still to be confirmed by insurance company. Wanted to know if you have any recommendation for a sample liquid and soft food diet plan. Thanks for your help.

Nothing very exciting - just Jello, applesauce, mashed potatoes/gravy....the norm. I will say that for Protein Shakes, the Premier Nutrition chocolate shakes sold at costco are by far my favorite for both the pre-op and the post-op Protein shakes. Good luck!

I got sick of cream Soup pretty fast and discovered that I could have refried Beans. It was a welcomed treat...w/ cheese and enchilada sauce. some people on here say they have added gauc or sour cream.

As far as shakes, I like Myoplex lite. They have 20 grams of protien and 170 calories. On soft food phase I ate cottage cheese, yougurt, apple sauce, mashed potatoes at thanksgiving (no gravy, lots of calories and fat) SF Jello and SF popsicles. Best wishes! You are starting a whole new phase of your life.

When I got to the mushy stage, I made scrambled eggs at work in the microwave often. I would beat an egg with a little milk in a container in the morning and put it in the fridge at work. When ready, just put it in the microwave (30 seconds, stir and then 15 more seconds until done). It helped me get in my Protein and varied what I ate throughout the day.

I'm 6 days post op, and am not supposed to have yogurt or similar foods until next week, but since I discovered that I probably have Thrush, I went ahead and made a smoothie using the Light Key Lime Pie yogurt and enough skim milk to thin it down to a soupy consistency. It was AMAZING!!

I was excited to get something that had a little bit of flavor without that funky aftertaste of the protein/slim fast shakes! YUMM-O!! If you give it a try, lemme know what you think!

Sorry - I just reread your original post and realized I didn't answer your question. As far as a sample liquid / mushie diet plan, here's the one my docs office gave me...Hope this helps shed some light:

First day post op: Room Temp water; in the evening, broth, boullion.

2nd - 3rd day: Clear liquids (warm - not hot/cold)- Water, broth, boullion, clear Soups strained (broth only)

4th -14th day: Clear or Full liquids (4 - 6 oz, 6 times a day): Skim Milk, Slim Fast, Broths, SF Carnation Instant Breakfast, SF Popsicles, Low-Fat strained creamy Soups - thinned, 100 % juice (limit 4 oz a day)...I like V8 Low Sodium Soups. You have to strain them well and thin them out though.

Week 3: pureed Textured Foods, scrambled eggs, SF/Low Fat puddings, FF Yogurt - smooth/no fruit bits, Hot Cereals - thinned (Cream of Wheat, etc), Applesauce, Low Fat Creamy Soups.

Week 4: Mushies - Soft Canned Veggies, Soft Canned Fruits, tuna or chicken salad. Consume Water between meals, waiting 1 hour after each meal.

Week 5: Transition to Solid Foods - Slowly add 2 oz Protein and 1 -2 oz of veggies 3 - 4 times a day. Baked Potato-no skin, macaroni noodles, sliced meats, raw fruits/veggies (as tolerated). Avoid stringy, fibrous foods and non-tender cuts of meats. Avoid white bread, popcorn, coconut.

Must chew all foods at least 30 times. Do not drink liquids with meals.

Excellent ideas everyone. Thank you so much! Yes, I'm excited about the surgery and plan to do well on it. I'm finally ready to let go of this weight for so many reasons. Thanks again for all of the great ideas.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
