FOOD, FOOD Everywhere, and only a drop we eat!

Recommended Posts

A peculiar issue has risen that is bemusing and slightly troubling and of course, it has to do with food.< /p>

If you were to look in my fridge or freezer right this moment you would think I was feeding a platoon. The freezer is crammed full of things to cook and the fridge is crammed full of leftovers.

It's just myself and my son in the house yet, my eyes keep telling me I need this chicken and that fish and those steaks. When I cook I want what I want but usually I cook in much too large quantities with the intention of freezing some. Then, I find that I have no interest in the leftovers.

I know it's going to take cooking less, buying less, etc. to fix the problem. I'm just a little amazed that it's occurring.

Has anyone else had this compulsion to hoard food yet knowing you're not going to eat it?

EXACTLY Missy. I cook more now than I ever did pre-band. I try loads of new recipes and just want to do the whole process but actually eat it. I still eat a little but it's totally not about eating it, it's obsessing with it, I guess. The reading, the looking, the recipes, etc. So weird for me.

And soocalchic. I unloaded my freezer this weekend and took it to my parents for Superbowl. The crowd there enjoyed all the Soup and pot roast. Hallellujah, I've found some takers.

lol, DH likes leftovers, so he takes lunch most days.

We have always enjoyed cooking together. I am so happy that we don't have to give that up.

Chapamar and MissyMS -

I totally hear you! I, too, am obsessed with food. My bf just doesnt get it! lol And I'm a Foodie down to my bones. I subscribe to 11 different food / cooking magazines, and Food Network is my Mother Ship :-)

I love to cook as well... but i can't very much at all. The problem in my house is that neiter of us really likes leftovers. I also love Soup, stews, chili, etc... So i make huge batches and then freeze it. However, it seems I never get around to wanting it again, and I end up thorowing it out or giving it away. Then a week later I'll make another batch! I also horde food, but I know why I do that. It stems back to my childhood and never having enough.

So yes, I literally dream of broasted chicken and Pasta, I obsesse over my cookbooks - which I read cover to cover like any other novel I may be reading - they're like children! hehehehe

I just wanted you to know that you're not alone ... EVER!!

I believe it is because our eyes are much bigger then our stomachs. I think it just takes a while to adjust. I am 10 mos. post op and still order way more food in a drive thru or restaurant then I can ever eat. Oh well, there are worse things I suppose.

OMG - this is so me. I've always spent my Sundays cooking and prepping food for the week, but now what used to last a week could easily last a whole month! I'm having a hard time learning to cook in smaller portions. I keep saying I'm going to have a "clean the freezer" week (or two or three), but I'm always seduced by a new recipe, or I just get plain bored! I'm going to try to stay out of the grocery store this weekend. No inspiration/temptations!

I'm a HUGE fan of TopChef. I keep thinking about trying to come up with my own "amuse bouche." I did get a Spanish Tapas cookbook for Christmas. Still, I don't need 18 appetizer portions. I just don't know how to shop or cook in such small amounts!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
