had lap band and surprise hernia repair

Recommended Posts

When I woke up on friday after having my lapband put in, i was told the dr had to fix a hiatal hernia too. Did any of you all have to have these 2 surgeries together? Do you think recovery takes any longer having both of these done together?

thanks,

Lisa

I had both of these done. From reading others' stories, my recovery has not taken any longer than any one else. I was on Clear Liquids for 1 day, full liquids for a week, and then mushies for a week and then on to soft.

Of course everyone is different so make sure to follow your own doctor's post-op instructions.

I also woke up to find that I had a hernia repaired that I did not even know I had. Seems from reading the boards that I had a typical recovery and no extra discomfort or time from the extra lil task he performed.

H. Hernias can cause serious problems with the band in the long run...so best its all fixed

Same here. It seems like my recovery has been the same as everyone else. I did feel as thou I was bruised (like punched in the center of my chest) but I didn’t now know if that was from the banding surgery or the hernia surgery.

I had hernia repair, didn't know I had it prior to surgery and went for 1/2 mile walk in my neighborhood the same day as surgery. Continued to increase the distance everyday and was back to working a 60hr/week in 5 days. (granted I sit at a desk) I am three weeks post op today and walked about 4 miles before work this morning.

Hi,

I too had both. Post-op I felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest for the first couple of days, but was able to go back to work on the fifth day - I have a desk job.

I don't think my recovery took any longer than average.

This happened to me also. My recovery was no different. They don't do anything differently with the exception of a few stitches in that muscle. My surgeon said that it is quite common. I felt like a "normal" person three days after surgery.

Same thing here. I wish I would have know before hand since I am self-pay and I could have put some of the surgery to the ins. Now it is "submit a claim" and we will see if they will cover any of the surgery. My surgery was on 2/3. I stayed 1 night in the hopital and glad I did. I slept for sooooo long. I just could not wake up. I was soo tired. have not really had that much gas pain, thank goodness. One weird thing is that my vision is blurry. My bp is fine and I am not dizzy so the docs think it is from the pain med.

Came home weighing more than when I went in:ohmy:

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
