Can't Get Enough Calories

Recommended Posts

I can't seem to get more then 800 calories a day......and I'm not loosing any weight. Tonight for dinner I measured out 3 oz of turkey breast and one cup of sauted mixed veggies. Took me 45 minutes and I couldn't eat it all. And now I'm so stuffed I hurt. Burping, sliming. Could I be too tight? It's been almost 3 weeks since my fill. The first week I lost 5 pounds and last week 1 pound. This week I'm up 4 pounds. My doc said if I haven't lost 8 pounds in 4 weeks to come back for another fill. I don't know if I can possible be any tighter! I was banded 11/16/09. Lost 17 before the surgery and only 4 since.

You should not be sliming and you definitely need more high in Protein calories. I am sure your doctor didn't mean for you to get more fill if he knew you were sliming now. You for sure want to go in and see him and let him know what is going on. It sounds as though your body is in starvation mode. The reason you probably can't eat very much right now also is because if you are sliming a lot, your stomach will have swollen and it is making a bad situation worse by tightening even further. Please do not wait to see him so that you do not do irrepairable damage.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to gain weight on less than 800 calories a day!!

You need to talk to your surgeon.

maybe you are drinking more calories than you know. Do you have juice? It is sort of impossible to gain on 800 a day.

Hi,

I had this issue for a few weeks and my weight loss stalled. I didn't have much of a pre-op diet, so all of my loss has been since surgery. However, I noticed that after I lost 20lbs in the first 2 weeks, that I couldn't lose a pound to save my life. I called my nutritionist and we went over my meal plans. Though I was getting in at least 60 grams of Protein a day, I wasn't getting in any veggies and simply wasn't eating enough. She put me on 800-1000 calories a day and it really changed everything. I had been doing 600-700 and she said it just wasn't enough to stimulate my metabolism. So perhaps if you play around w/ changing your calories and adding in more exercise you will start to see a change. Our bodies get use to the calories we feed it and when we go too far under what we need, it can go into starvation mode and hold on to what it's got This makes it that much tougher to lose.

Best,

Lauren

Weight gan can also be due to Fluid retention. Are you drinking 8 C. of fluid a day ? ITs as important as the Protein. do contact your surgeon about a dietician/nurtritinist, the volume at one meal may be too much .

I really like your posts that I read...but on this one, I must disagree.:)

I have gained weight on 800 calories a day many, many times. I am not a liquid calorie person, I drink nothing but Water, and I monitor not only my calories and Protein, but my sodium, saturated fats and carbs. I do not eat processed foods, ever. I measure out all of my servings and I have eliminated all added sugar...even with that, last week I was up 3 lbs. Not my TOM...I too have discussed with my nutritionist and a trainer that I know personally through work, they both said I was not eating enough. I have in the last 30 yrs. eaten way below 1000 calories and I have lost quickly. But my body, my metabolism and my hormones are making this a guessing game for not only me but the professionals that know for a fact that I am following this lap band to a "T".

I have come to realize that there is no such thing as "IMPOSSIBLE" when it comes to the band.

I have gained weight on 800 calories a day many, many times.

I guess I stand corrected but it makes absolutely no sense to me.

I am not a doctor and don't even play one on the internet (contrary to wacky Janet's opinion). From everything I have read; starvation mode is real and can keep you from losing weight. I have seen nothing about actually gaining weight.

How much energy were you expending and were you exhausted much of the time?

The last conversation the nutritionist had with me went like this....."even if you add 1 Tbs of olive oil to veggies and toss with seasoning or add a snack to your daily calories, I want you to have 200-250 calories more per day" of course healthy calories.

I do about 45-60 minutes of cardio 5X a week. Nothing crazy hard but I break a sweat and I can feel a difference in my muscles. To make it real simple, she wants me taking in a clear 900-1000 calories a day...not 1000 and then minus the exercise. I also work at a desk all day so, I don't count anything but my actual workout or if I do major household cleaning I will sometimes count that.

I truly believe that I am responsible for screwing up my own metabolism through the yrs. The numbers that should make sense never do for me. BMR and all the others...

I know everyone wants to say "oh starvation mode, eat more," but I have a hard time grasping how you could possibly GAIN weight by taking in less than your body needs to function. Maybe someone could explain something about this? Other than my "my doctor said" or "I read somewhere" because I haven't lost in a week and I'm always around 700- 800 calories. I'm afraid to just UP my calories. On the other hand I have lost faster than almost anyone I have seen so maybe less calories Is effective.

It takes fuel to burn fuel. The more fuel you add to the fire, the hotter it burns.

While in starvation mode, your body is being very conservative as to where it burns calories and how many. When you give your body enough calories to function normally it will burn more. This is where the BMR comes into play.

perhaps you should read this study and tell me what you think.

The Truth about "Starvation Mode"

I think it could be dangerous to tell obese people to eat more calories because they will lose weight. I know I'm not a doctor, but rumors always fly around these boards. Just trying to get the facts.

Thanks everyone......I do know that I am not drinking enough water! I'm working on that and I've added an extra Protein Drink and v8 to my daily intake.

Here is quote from this article:

But when you think about it, doesn't that make fat storage sense? Why would our Maker create us with the ability to store fat if it couldn't sustain us and preserve our lean mass in cases of extreme want?

When he starts talking about his "Maker" anything he says is conjecture and not scientific fact.

Don't read just the articles. Check out real fat people's blogs. They speak from experience not conjecture.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
