First steps, any advice??

Recommended Posts

I'm 30. i'm 5'5", 283 lbs, highest weight ever. I'm a mom and i've had problems with food and weight since I was 5. I am now to the point where I don't trust myself to even start on any more diets or eating right b/c I don't trust myself to stick with it. I exercise and some weeks I even go to the gym 3-4 x's but still I just can't get eating under control. I thought lap Band or surgery would be a cop out but now I just see it as the help I need. I have Aetna insurance and would take any amount of advice that anyone can offer so that I can apply for this surgery and get it. I don't have diabetes or high bp, just light sleep apnea and depression/anxiety. Any pointers? I guess i'm just going to call my insurance up and say I want to start the process. I have been under weight monitoring by my doctor for atleast 2 years, every 3 months. Thank you, in advance, for any advice, tips or words of wisdom you may have.

My family physician said I qualify, and Insurance said that my plan covered 100% of the surgery. I'm going to a seminar to check this out more.

My Doctor helped me every step of the way, including filing the insurance paperwork and helping me with the appeals until my insurance approved my surgery. If your Doctor isn't helping you, find a different surgeon. Good luck!

Congrats spaceycasey, that's great about your insurance. I as well had no other problems due to my weight, excapt a high BMI and I just had my band in November. It was the best thing I've ever done for me . I've lost over 40lb so far and 27 inches, I'm loving my band. Good luck and keep us all updated.

I had my lap band done 10/20/09. I paid $10,200, no insurance. Best money I ever spent. Go for it.

Your doctors will walk you through the process. You might have to do a doctor supervised diet for six months with monthly check-ins for insurance approval, even though there is documentation with check-ins every three months. You might not have to, though; it all depends :smile2:

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
