8 days post you shouldn't even be considing whole foods...nevermind the fat in sunflower seeds. I would think you are still on full liquids. There are lots of stages until you get to the nut/seed time.

Good Luck!

I was on a liquid diet for a week, then soft foods for a week. I want to say my nutrionist said seeds are very hard to digest. I am not positive though. I would check with your doctor or nutritionist.

I want to caution you on two things.

As rhondalou pointed out, sunflower seeds are loaded with fat. 1 cup has 799 calories and 580 of those calories are fat! I don't know what recommendations your doctor has given you, but I tried to stay between 1000-1200 calories.

Also, if you happen to accidently swallow a shell, you could be in for some serious pain if it gets stuck .

Just wanted to make sure you were aware of the disadvantages of eating those sunflower seeds. There are many other nuts that have less calories, offer great Protein and nutritional advantages.

Just like with the preop diet, doctors vary widely in what they prescribe for postop diet. I was on pureed Protein at 3 days.

Re: sunflower seeds, in particular. They are a pretty good low-carb snack in TINY quantities. But the shell poses HUGE health risks. It should go without saying that the shell needs to be spit out---but sometimes, they slide down accidentally. And one of the sickest patients I ever had as an RN was a man for whom sunflower seed shells got hung up on each other and created a horrendous obstruction that nearly killed him.

He was NOT post-bariatric surgery--just a regular guy. Factor in a tiny little stoma from your pouch to the rest of your stomach, and the potential for trouble is hugely magnified.

I'd recommend, if your doctor is ok with the seeds, that you get the ones that are already shelled. Better safe than sorry.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
