Oh, I am filled oh, too, tight. I went in last Monday for the fill, and I thought I would be fine when I left. The next day, I felt very tight, but I thought it was the usual swelling that you get after a fill, and that I'd be fine. I am NOT fine. I have not slept in a week because of the reflux. I am waking up to choking on spit up, and I am miserable. I feel like I can't even function. I tried to call my provider, but she was gone for the holiday, and for the next day, and the answering service wouldn't even take a message or let me talk with the on-call person. She told me to go to ER if I needed help by Monday. Honestly, if it were the slightest bit more offensive, I would go to ER. I just can't afford to pay 1000.00 for an ER visit if it can be avoided. I am just trying to hang on until tomorrow when I can make the drive and get an unfill. Until then, I am so tired but I am afraid to go to sleep because it will just be hellish. My whole body hurts from sleeping sitting up, which just barely helps. I just feel like I can't make it through tomorrow.

Have you gotten any relief from some of the OTC antiacids? Mylanta or the other pill that actually keeps your tummy from producting acid (forget the name)?

Thanks, Everyone. I don't think it is acid. I did in the beginning, but now I realize that it's saliva. I know, that's sick...sorry. I also tried not eating any food after 1pm, but that doesn't work either. I seem to be getting slimy just from laying down. There doesn't even need to be food in there. I ordered a sub for the second half of tomorrow, and I am either going to the fill lady, or I am going to the ER.

I talked to the on-call gal today, and she recommended that I go to a minor ER. When I called the minor ER, I couldn't even get past the receptionist. She didn't seem to even want to think about what it involved. She just told me no, no, no. It's irritating because it is a simple injection. If I had a Huber needle, I'd do it myself! I just can't see paying the 1000.00 to go to ER unless it is a true emergency. It's irritating that she wouldn't even ask if any of the professionals at the clinic could access a port. They do this day in, and day out for folks with ports for pain and med purposes.

OK. Sorry. I'm just irritable from the prolonged lack of sleep. I will try to post tomorrow, but I may end up just going to bed after I get this resolved. Thanks for your kind words.

My doctor told me to start out my day with a hot beverage to help loosen the tightness of the band ...maybe you could try some hot chocolate or hot tea or something?

Sweety, not to state the obvious - but if you can't lay down without choking on your own saliva, well, that IS an emergency. Shame on the surgeon's office for not seeing you immediately. Get help as soon as you can. No one should have to go through this! Also don't start taking over the counter drugs and antacids. That could just contribute to your choking issue.

It's not my surgeon. My surgeon lives in another state, and I might have been able to get in if I lived there. You know, it actually would cost the same for me to fly out there to be seen, but I didn't really consider that because it is such a simple procedure.

I would love to go to the ER, but we are talking about nearly one half of my monthly salary for one visit to ER. The cost of care is not supported within the free market economy in my state. You simply can't purchase medical care if you make anywhere near the median income in WA.

This is the reality you have to live with if you don't have insurance to cover what you need. I am just thankful that I now have, at least, basic medical insurance which will cover most other things. I remember when I used to have to make these decisions about when my husband should go see the cardiologist....

In any case, I made it through last night, and I am going to drive over the border to see someone today. Wish me luck.

Lost time from work: $150.00

A total unfill after nine months of fills: $800.00

A year's worth of aftercare purchased all at once: $1500.00

A local surgeon who promises to have someone on-call 24 hrs per day, 365 days per year: Priceless

Oh my goodness! Well I just read your whole thread and am glad to see a happy result. I'm worried I will have the same problem that you faced. I am having my surgery in Tijuana, MX Jan 15th and he gives fills/aftercare for free, but the cost to fly would be more than if I paid a local doctor. I am looking for an aftercare physician in my area that has unlimited fills/visits. How did you find yours? Thanks!

There is a section on this site if you scroll down to find doctors. I wish you luck finding someone who'll be there for you. I never dreampt I'd be in the situation I was in today. Knowing what I know now, I would make sure that you find someone who is local, and who is available at all times. Hindsight is 20/20, but since yours is still ahead of you, I'd like to tell you some things I hadn't known. I'd never have trusted that I would just be OK, and if I really needed help, I could go to the ER. The minor ER here would NOT help me, and the ER would have charged me what it would have cost for a full year of aftercare by a surgeon. I now know, for certain, you can find yourself in a dangerous position if you can't get the help you need immediately. It would have been nice to know that no-one at my person's clinic could cover my provider when she was gone, or that, in fact, they couldn't even refer me to anyone for help. I q' you, find out who does the care in your town, and what relationship you have to have with them before you are banded. Good luck. Off to sleep now.... finally.

These are very important issues to consider when paying out of pocket or having surgery in another country.Good long term follow up care could be the difference between sucess and disaster

I did have an arrangement for good follow-up care. She did have great recommendations and her experience was excellent, as well. I didn't know that I would need to look for these sort of unlikely scenarios, and I am sharing because I think it is good to know what to look for when you say "good" follow-up care. Honestly, I don't think she would have anticipated that something like this might happen, either. Now I understand that it is critical for those professionals who serve in rural areas to become affiliated with others who can cover them if they are not available.

For the record, I had my surgery by one of the most reputable surgeons in this country. I am certain that I'd have had excellent care in this event if I lived in that state. I'm sure I'd have been referred immediately.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
