Banded 17th December in Australia

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have been banded two and a half weeks now and just have a few question.

1. is it normal to still have some mild discomfort after two weeks?

2. Had restriction straight after the operation but am feeling hungry now and not much restriction (still sticking to exactly the amounts to eat as specified by my specialist though) Is this normal (no fill in band yet)

The restriction doesn't worry me as much as the discomfort. Did anyone else still have discomfort after the two week mark?

Any advice would be great

Thanks

Hi there, congratulations on having just been banded.. Right now, you may have thoughts like.. What have a freakin done?? Dont stress, this will be replaced with more positive thoughts as soon as you are feeling better.. It is only normal to have some kind of discomfort after only 2 weeks.. If by 6 weeks, you are still not feeling right, perhaps it would be a good idea to see your doctor.

Also, it is normal to start having an apetite, it is a good sign that the initial swelling of the band site has gone down. It may even take more than your first fill to feel restriction.. Be patient, and know that you are on the right track..

Best of Luck..

xx Nene

I too was banded 12/17. The only discomfort I have any more is at night when I first lay on my tummy. The swelling had pretty much gone from around my port, so when I lay down, I have to "arrange" myself so that I'm not putting too much weight on it, as I can definitely feel it.

Also, I find that if I drink too much Water close to or right before bed time, my tummy is uncomfortable just because it's full of Water. So I have to make sure not to do this again. lol

But, the thing to keep in mind is that if something doesn't feel normal, do not hesitate to call your surgeon. It's better to have him check you out and find that all is OK, then to assume all is OK, then something go wrong.

Good luck!

Hi! I was also banded on 12/17 and rebanded on 12/20. I still have some discomfort especially if I have drank too much or eaten a bit too much. Mine is mostly under my left ribcage. I also felt restriction until about 4 days ago and now I feel no restriction. People say that is normal though. Your swelling is going down and that swelling was causing the restriction. I have my first fill on 1/14. I am hoping that gives me a little restriction again.

If you don't mind my asking, why did you have to be rebanded three days later? Did you have serious complications?

Yes I had complications with the anethesia the first time and could not stop throwing up. I am not a puker so I could not figure out why I was throwing up non stop. My Dr. took all the Fluid out of my band the day after surgery. He said it came with a little in it. That helped for a couple of hours and then I was back to throwing up. He admitted me into the hospital the next day and did a barium swallow and could see that because of all the vomiting I had herniated part of my stomach over the band. The second surgery was a piece of cake though!

Hi Nicole,

I was banded on 17 December too - in the US - although I am an Aussie!

I feel pretty much back to normal now, except itchy around incisions, and not quite ready to lie on my tummy at night, which is still a bit uncomfortable.

Good luck!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
