5 weeks since surgery -- feeling depressed :(

Recommended Posts

SO...

I had my surgery 5 weeks ago. In the first week I lost about 15 pounds and in the next 2 weeks my weight slowly came back as I was starting to eat solids. I got my first fill last Tuesday. They did it while I was under and xray and I swallowed barium. Initially they put 4cc's in the band and thought it would be tight based on the Xray so they left me with 2cc's. The next few days I was on liquids then soft solids, and I lost 6 pounds quick. I've slowly added the solids recently and I gained 6 pounds back!!!

I'm just so frustrated. I know that when anyone is on a liquid diet they are going to lose weight right away, but I get my hopes up after losing a few pounds and then it comes back.

I'm excercising at least 2-3 times a week with what my work schedule permits.

I'm eating healthy...

Yet I don't feel ANY restriction. I know this sounds strange, but I actually feel less restriction then I did before I had my first fill!

I'm just so depressed and I'm unsure of what to do.

I do have an appointment for Jan 13th for a possible 2nd fill. But I wonder if I should call thema and ask if I can get in sooner. Do you guys think they would say no considering they want 4 weeks spacd between them?

Please help!

Hi Jessica,

I feel your pain!!! Maybe you could post a typical menu for the "experts" on the board can have a look. A 6 lb. gain sounds like quite a bit. I can't offer much assistance as I haven't had first fill. Wishing you well.

Jessica:

I suggest that you call and ask for another fill now. You won't get the benefits of the band until you reach the "green" zone and feel satisfied with eating about 1/2 to 1 cup of food and feel satiated for 4+ hours.

I also suggest that you take a look at fit day, or my daily plate, or one of those programs if you really want to analyze what you are eating. Maybe you need to make some different choices.

I wish you well with your band. It's very hard at first, and I cannot imagine how I would have felt at the beginning if I had been gaining.

I love my band and my new flat tummy!

Take a closer look at what you are eating. Journal keeping is important b/c it helps you see where your mistakes are happening. Mydailyplate is a good one to use.

It never hurts to call for another fill. You are paying the bill. They can only say No or come on in.

Right now it sounds as if you're in bandster's hell and that is a tough time. Hope it gets better for you.

What is your weight right now - the 228 in your siggie? Girl that is GREAT!!! Almost 20 pounds in 5 weeks. That is amazing. Could you have done that without the band? You are losing at a great rate. I hope that I am down 20 lbs from my surgery date at my 5 week appointment

my question would be are you eating slider foods?

I haven't gotten a fill yet but I can definitely eat more than 1/2 cup of food and depending on what I eat I'm hungry before 4 hours. I go on the 23rd for my first fill and hope that I feel some restriction from it.

Don't let it get you down. Continue to talk to your doc and you can find out what is going wrong. I would call and get an appt as soon as possible. Hopefully your not drinking with meals or eating "slider" foods.

I'm sorry you're having a rough time. I am only 4 weeks out and haven't had a fill yet, but I bet I know what you're going through. That huge amount of weight loss so fast is quite a heady feeling; when it drops off or creeps back, that is very disappointing. Which is why I'm staying off the scale. I was banded 11/24. My first fill isn't until 1/11....and I'm staying off the scale until then. Right now, I've had a couple of non scale victories (looser clothes) and I'm trying to keep those at the front of my mind. Hopefully the doctor's scale will reflect a loss when I go in next and when you go! Chin up!

I would also try getting in another day of exercise a week. I know that with a busy schedule it doesnt always seem possible but if you can try going early in the AM before work. I go at 5am and it really helps boost my metabolism for the day.

I recently started on solids and have noticed I gained a couple pounds. I attributed this to the fact that the actual weight of the solid foods I eat is more than the liquids. That may be part of the cause?

I was banded 11/25 lost some then got down to 200.6 and was so excited! But then gained 3 pounds? Why ?? Beats the shit out of me just out bodys adjusting I suppose. Its a week later now and I am down to 200 again so just hang in!! It's not going to be fast weight loss like the sleeve or bypass!

Hey guys! Just to update you. I got an appointment with the doctor next monday to get another fill!! THANK GOD! I also decided to be a bit more organized and I'm planning out my food for the week each sunday. That way I know what I'm eating and how much.

I've also commited to working out 6 days a week! If it's not at the gym it's on the wii-fit.

I always notice when on the liquid diet the weight comes off faster & then when I get to my mushy or solid food stage again it comes back on for a bit til i ACTUALLY lose the fat. My doctor said this is because, even though you are doing nothing but liquids it's almost like the body gets dehydrated? or something like that. Anyways, it's normal. I try not to freak out, and for that matter I stay clear of the scale while on liquids b/c I know it's not a "true" weight. Good luck to you.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
