Here is an update from my whole ordeal in this thread. Most will not like it as I do not:

I went to my DR Yesterday for a follow up and this is what happened. I did a swallow test which showed the banned had slipped and forced some of the stomach up through the band which made it so I could not eat more than three or four small bites of food of any type then it closed off my opening till it moved through. Anyway this setup an emergency surgery I believe I was in the OR in less than 3 hours later with all the rest of the tests that need to be done to get you there. Labs, Xrays, and blood work and so fourth. Keep in mind I went in for a check up. I called my wife to let her know of the situation and hell broke loose as we were in the middle of the start of another winter storm again and she was 50 miles away. I told her to stay put I was fine. she was a wreck I am a big boy and can take care of myself. anyway. So back to the story My Doc says we have to do this now.I am concerned about my INsurance, he says now is not the time to worry about that this is life and death issue. not a cosmedic. We will worry about money later. so here we go. I for one always worry about money. I have had 3 major surgery issues in 13 months now and all in different ductable years (sucks) Any way surgery went great the doc took the band off and repositioned it and could use my band again saving me the cost of a new band. Thank Goodness.

I don't know how to really feel now as should I be happy. or sad, mad or relived.

I do truly love my Dr and his office staff. They have been nothing but helpful in everyway. They are the best. The band has gotten me off all my meds. High blood pressure, Diabetes, Hypertention and all pain meds for lower back pain and knee pain. So I am good. By the way I have lost over 180+ lbs since my whole journey began. But today it seems I start again with a newly positioned band. is this weird or am i normal. Scotty D

Scotty D,

Thanks for the update, I have been wondering how you were doing. Sorry to hear about the slippage, but very happy to hear they could fix it!

Here's hoping your out of pocket isn't too, too much and you are all healed up and filled up to perfection soon!

All the best,

Denise

Thanks for your concern Denise

It has been a rough road these past few weeks and yesterday was quite a shock just to have a check up and end up in surgery. But all things have a purpose and the DR says that there was not erosion and the stomach looks very good. So I guess I am happy.

So How is your Band and program working for you all going well? are you on track for what you want?

Hi Scotty,

Thanks for askin'!

It is going well for me. I am a few lbs away from a normal BMI and about 14 or so over my own goal. I have been staying around this weight for a while now. But I am maintaining with ease, which is not something that has ever happened for me before. I am thankful for that.

I have been tossing around getting another fill. But every time I think about it, I have a stuck episode that makes me decide against it. :smile2: I have a 10cc band with somewhere around 5cc in it. I lost count somewhere along the way. I thought I could rememeber, silly me!

My blood pressure is normal, and I am off my meds for that. YAY!!! And my blood sugar is normal!! I was pre-diabetic before my surgery, another big YAY!!

I am not working at it as hard as I could be, and I think my thyroid level is low -- I have a thyroid issue -- Last time I was checked I was low, my GP upped my dose enough to get me to the low side of normal. I have an appointment with a thyroid specialist, but not for a couple of months. I am hoping I can up my dose more and that will help kick start me and get my energy level up a bit.

But I have to say that for me, getting this band is one of the best decisions I have made. I can do more and feel so much better than I did!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Denise

Hi Scotty - was wondering about you and in fact I went to doc day before and got no fill and I was thinking Scotty prob got a fill.. Did NOT expect to hear this news. But having said this remember that a week ago you thought you would have to loswe the band entirely if the unfill did not work. So the fact that you got to keep it and use the old one - I would be relieved. But me personally I would like to know what causes these things. and what if anything can be done to avoid it. Example these days I think they stitch the band in differently to make slips more difficult etc. It didn't sound like it was anything on your end like excessive vomiting.

So how are you feeling now? And btw -Wasn't it excruciating? Very scary but glad they fixed you up! So two weeks of liquid two weeks of mushies? Is that the drill?

The Doc thinks it was caused by the flu or a stomach virus that caused the vomiting over christmas as I had that whole thing going on. It was stiched in real well and all. I have the 14cc band that is a year old that I was lucky that it was a brand new design when I was banded that can be unhooked and rehooked. It saved me $5000.00 in this surgery I just had yesterday. as for the diet the next few weeks it is just like getting the band the first time. although the band is placed above the spot it was before so my pouch will be smaller and the chance of this happening again is slim as the scar tissue will have to pull through the band and then the stomach will have to come then. But it could happen. As my Dr. says I am in the 2-5% of the people that have issues. I am not mad or upset I am happy to be alive and it is fixed and my Dr. cares he saw the problem and fixed it with no crap. Now I hope the ins pays some or I will find a way to pay. that will be a bitch. I have had 3 major surgery in 13 months all in seporate deducable years. that sucks.

oh avoid vomiting at all costs. this is the biggest threat to your band. the other is over eating or stuffing your pouch. stop when your full. We all know when we are full STOP EATING SOLID FOODS

When you say vomiting it is different than the PB or regurg vomiting right? I have to think that vomiting is almost painful and a lot more difficult if stuff is trying to come up from your stomack through the opening.

why did he think it was life and death? Do we automatically build up scar tissue in the area it is placed? I have to think the insurance pays if it is medically necessary and they paid it to begin with???? I will cross my fingers for you!!!

I think overall the news could have been worse! Though I'm sure it is no fun to have to have surgery! Speedy recovery!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
