question for all you insurance savvy people.........
lovedXJesus replied to lovedXJesus's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The doctor that I go to is already booking his surgeries into December. Maybe even January by now! Anyhow, his office has not even called yet to tell me that I was approved. I found out as an aside when I called the insurance company about a question concerning my daughters physical. That was a week ago. I am not too worried about it I guess. If its going to happen, it will. I was really just wondering if anyone else had the same thing happen and how it had worked out. Thank you for taking the time to answer my post though. I appreciate it. -

Welcome! It's common to go slow and be a little worried; it's a big change! I personally LOVE my band and I've only had it a little over 6 weeks. It's already changed my life. But read and research, as Agreatknead said, find out if you think it will fit with you! -
Congrats!! You are starting on a brand new journey, and being scared is part of the journey. My date is Dec. 3 and I'm terrified, but ecstatic at the same time. So many mixed emotions going on right now. RELIEF is one of the major ones. I am relieved to finally realize I couldn't do it on my own and that this tool exist to aid me on this journey. Congrats once again, you'll do great!!

I have heard that it is typical to start losing hair between 3 to 9 months post op. I have read that nothing will really stop the loss, but that the Biotin helps with regrowth. The theory is that it is not only from the stress of the surgery, but also the anesthesia, in addition to the change in nutrition. My hair also started coming out a lot more at about 4 months. No bald spots, though, just a lot of hair in the brush, on my pillow and in the shower. And I know I'm getting enough nutrition so I know it is not that. Do not worry. It WILL grow back and stop falling out, but it might take a few more months. I have read that hair starts falling out about 3 months after any stressful time in someone's life. It will get better. Hang in there.

Hi, Well I had my plication for 7 months. They removed it 7 weeks ago, But till this day I'm still loosing my hair I have huge bold spots that I can't hide no more only if I wear a hat, I started loosing it about 4 months after I had the plication done The Dr.told me it would stop. But it did not, and now that I don't have plication any more it still comes out like crazy. I’m taking Biotin, B12 Vitamins, and using Biotin Shampoo and conditioner but nothing seems to help. My Dr. told me to go to a Dermatologist so I can get Hormones shots on my scalp for hair growth. I think it was because of so much stress with plication complications .I will wait a little more on the Dermatologist maybe. Don’t know what to do

How did recovery compare to previous surgeries?
newat52 replied to nmck's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My two c-sections (30 and 26 years ago) were harder for me. This was really a walk in the park compared to those. I was much more sore with the kids. For my sleeve, I was up walking 3 hours after I into my room. No nausea, that was my biggest fear and it didn't happen. I sat in a comfy chair all afternoon and evening. I walked laps every hour. That helped more than I can say. Didn't get into the bed till I went to sleep that night. Next morning I was able to go home. I had set my mind to walking as soon as I could as so many people said that would help. They were right. Getting up out of the bed the first time was a doozy but after that, it was quite manageable. Stay ahead of the pain for the first 48 hours with meds, that what's it's there for. Good luck, you will love your sleeve! I'm 4 months out and would do it again in a heartbeat! -
Well I'm home and three days out. I was so scared of the operation and not waking up but that was just silly . I spent two nights in hospital a Nd so far so good. The gas though omg! Hurts so much it's not in my shoulder which is good It was when I woke up but it went quickly. I had. First BM today to so looks like its going all good. Just the pain in the Tum every now and then kind like a stomach rumble I'm not hungry but I feel it and if I'm low on pain relief I really feel it. I'm on soup but Im counting down the two-three weeks till I can have mash potato or something real. I was on the pre diet for a month so I miss a real food substance. Anyway I'm going to get up for another walk around the house. Thanks to all that supported me in the pre op group. Now I'm in post op whoooop whoooop

 I am so excited, I started the process on Feb 23rd, 09', I was told my the scheduler she would call me by Monday or Tueday of this week, here it is Thur and still didn't hear nothing, I got too impatient and called her. She got paperwork from CHAMPVA, which is my insurance, saying they don't need a preapproval. I am so excited, so we set the date for the surgery for the 17th of June 09'. I am going to do the Realize Band. I think the Realize Band is a better way for me to go. I go for the preop appointment on Monday. I have already lost 5lbs of the 10lbs I need to loose. With my husband being so supportive I know I will loose the other 5lbs so easy and fast. The doctor was talking about postponing the surgery for a few more weeks because I just had leg surgery on Tue, so thankfully Dr. White called the ortho surgeon and talked to him, she didn't have to postpone it afterall. I am so happy. I was just wondering does anyone got any tips on the protien shakes/drinks? I am looking for some that are not chalky or nasty. I have seen alot of talk about them on here, but I am having trouble disifering between them. Which is a better vitamine the Flinstones chewables or the Centrum one a day chewables? I have seen alot of both of them, but still needing the advice. Mandie. :tt1::biggrin::thumbup:

I only did 3 months (3 times) of diet monitoring with my doctor and a corresponding 6 week nutrition class with a nutritionist. They call this the "multi-discipline" approach. My doctor sent in a letter with my family history, diet attempts and all weight history he had on me. The nutritionist sent in a letter with the exact diet I was on and all weekly weigh in's. Of course, I also sent them every personal weight history I could find in the past 5-6 years in a nice little spreadsheet with what kind of diet I was on for each date. Plus a copy of the CURVES diet and my whole CURVES exercise schedule for the 2006 year. It was probably over-kill, but it did the job and I didn't have to do the complete 6 months. Once my surgeons office got all the paperwork from my appointments and me, they submitted the whole file to the insurance company, as well as a "dummy" surgery date to push it through fast. My surgeons office called me 6 days later telling me I was approved. -
I am on day 3 of a 10 day liquid diet (carnation, etc) and I have a raging headache. I NEVER get headaches. Has anyone else had this and what to do to relieve the pain? I don't want to take too much Tylenol but if thats all I can do. HELP!!! ANY suggestions appreciated!

13 Days...and The Butterflies Are Going Nuts...
Shelly-NO-Belly posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello Everyone! Well, I've done the this's and that's of everything required as far as pre-op goes. I officially started the 2 week pre-op diet today (which I'm used to...I tried Optifast at one point) and I am feeling all sorts of nervous. How horrible is the head hunger? I feel like I've made peace with the break up between me and food. I kicked it out...it moved out...but I've done that before. I'm just so worried I'm going to be tormented with head hunger. I had my gallbladder out in May 2011, so I think I'm pretty prepared for the abdominal pain that is coming...assuming that it'll be a little worse since there is an organ that needs to heal instead of just muscle and incisions. Also...how do you guys deal with people that you tell that want to scoff or assume you took the "easy" way out? I unfortunately know way too many people who are going to be negative, and again unfortunately, I can't really avoid them very easily. I'm assuming it's not polite to flip them off or punch them :boxing_smiley: Anyway...any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! -
I had my pre op class today. It was so informative. I was told about 2 or 3 weeks ago to lose some weight before now because I was up 6 lbs. I lost 4. I was really excited. But it was short lived when the doctor told me my liver was still big, and I needed to go on a straight liquid diet till surgery on the 16th. I kind of have a guilty conscience, because I did eat cheese and he knew it by the way my liver felt (how weird).

the time frame for your surgery largely depends on your insurance requirements. i had to do 6 months of a monitored diet beforehand, and my surgeon required at least a 10 pound weight loss beforehand. i also had appointments with exercise physiologists and nutritionists along the way. overall, it took me a little over 7 months from beginning to surgery. my nutritionist had me on a 1200 cal diet, which wasn't bad. i only had one day of liquids before surgery, although i hear a lot of people who have a few weeks of it. there is no magic number for weight loss. i'm 6 months out and have lost 65 pounds. i've seen others who have lost a lot more than me and others who have lost a lot less in the same time frame. everyone is different. it's hard to generalize much of anything with lap band because every surgeon does things differently, and each person has a different experience with it. i can say, however, that i'm really glad i did it, and i'd do it again in a heartbeat. good luck! -

One way to give the shakes a frappe/frosty texture is to make "milk cubes" in an ice cube tray. 1/3 milk cup is 2 full size ice cubes. Add 2/3 cup fat free milk. Mix in a blender. Run a search on here to look for low/no calorie add in's that will help make the shake taste better. -
I was really freaked out during the information seminar I attended. They said NO smoking at all for 2 months before surgery. So I did it! My GP wrote me a RX for Chantix. It stops the nicotine in your blood stream from hitting that happy place in your brain that says "gotta have a cigarette because it feels good!) Okay, that's my unscientific version of how it works. You take the pills for 7 days before your quit date, quit, and then keep taking them for around 12 weeks. I just finishing my starter pack of pills and will be using the continuation pack for another 4 weeks. I can truly and honestly say this has been a breeze. I have smoked for 20 years, stopped during my 2 pregnancies and kept starting up again. This time I really and truly feel it's for good. Just one person's story. Good luck to you.

Seeking Reliable, Cost Effective Surgeon
allnewme replied to leprechaunmomma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Seriously check out each of the top Mexican Dr's. Alvarez, Aceves, Kelly, and there are others. Read the boards, Google their names and read as much as you can from former patients. I even talked to people on the phone after I chose to go with Alvarez. Some Dr's put you in a house with nursing staff and many other patients after surgery, they don't keep you in a hospital. I prefer the hospital route, just to be safe. Some do several surgeries per day, Alvarez does 2, MAYBE 3, per day. I liked that fact because they can take their time in the OR plus have more time with you bedside. In the end, you have to have do your research and weigh the options. Go with your instinct, you will know in your heart which one meets your needs. -
Thanks for the traveling advice. My Dr. recommended about 1.5cc's for the first fill. He seemed to think that wasn't too risky. Also, he said I could come in a week later if I needed to and still have time to adjust. I appreciate all the help. Good idea to take the card from the packet. It'll be a good trip, I'm sure I'm worring over nothing. Thanks again!

Check with the airlines about what you can take on the plane that you don't buy at the airport. And enjoy lots of fish in China. One65: My best advice to you is DON'T compare yourself with anyone else. Everybody loses differently and at different times. I lost right after surgery due to inflammation. Then no loss. Then no loss after my first fill. then nothing after my second fill. I was kicking myself every way possible. My third fill hit the sweet spot and I am living the life of a bandster and losing. With all that, my AVERAGE loss equates to 2 pounds a week! But for most of my time, I hated looking at others' losses! Just don't do it. we're all different and we're all going through stages. Right now, you are averaging 1.6 pounds a week, believe it or not. So you are exactly right on track! You're supposed to average 1-2 pounds a week.

New band will travel
lapband4meNOW replied to lessofme's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am in the same position about flying. I am flying a 6 hour flight next week. I was told I can get my fill now, but I am waiting until I get back. The last thing I want it to be too tight while traveling and not having a way to get to my doctor to fix it. I would recommend that you just wait until you get back for the fill. Just be patient. You don't want to be stuck on an airplane with something getting caught or PB'ng all the time on your trip. Also, my doctor wouldn't allow me to fly for minimum 4 weeks because when you are post op you are at high risk for blood clots. On an international flight, if you are going to do it, get up every hour and walk the aisle. My friend got a blood clot from a plane ride (not even post op) and it lodged in her lung and she almost died. So I take that stuff very seriously. -
My insurance took only 2 days for final authorization. Horizon Blue Cross/shield . They allow up to a week.

Supervised Weight Loss DIet/ Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal and Weight Gain
1Day1Life4Now replied to sunny2day's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Rgrana, I too have BCBS Federal and I'm also on the 3 month supervised diet. I lost 4 pounds the first month and none the second month. My last weigh in is mid January. The nutritionist told me if we can maintain during the holidays without gaining, that is still very good. She still wants me to lose as much as I can between now and mid January to make the surgery easier. At the beginning she did tell me there was no certain amount that Insurance required us to lose and they wouldn't deny us for not losing so I am holding her to it. I am trying very hard to get some of the weight off but I am not stressing over it either. I'm in Mississippi, where are you? Do you have a tentative date yet? My tentative date is February 11th. I hope it will happen then and not later as I am planning a 2 week vacation out of the country in June. I want to be able to eat regular food. Good luck and let me know how it turns out since we are in the same boat. -
Supervised Weight Loss DIet/ Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal and Weight Gain
sunny2day posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been required by my insurance to participate in a 3 month supervised weight loss plan prior to submitting a request for weight loss surgery. I weighed in on November 07, 2013 and I have to do my final weigh in on December 19, 2013 prior to my doctor submitting a claim to my insurance, blue cross blue shield federal plan. My question is this, I believe I have gained about 4 pounds since my last weigh in and the whole time I have been on the diet I have lost. I am guessing I did not do as good as I thought throught the holidays. Has anyone ever gained weight in the supervised diet with blue cross blue shield federal and got denied or approved. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
