3 Jun surgery date but worried about a1c to high
jtickle replied to lockhb's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My A1c was 10.8 in March. The surgeon wants it lower than 10 in order to do surgery. I had rechecked a couple of weeks ago and it was 9.8. They did my chart review and I passed. Now I am just waiting for insurance company to give me an answer. I called them and they said it would probably be Monday before they have a decision. I am confident I will get approved but I still worry about the denial stuff. -
Thank you for your candor. As someone who is a couple weeks away from surgery I want to hear everyone's experiences. Post-op issues are what I am concerned about too, so by relating your experience you help me learn. It is greatly appreciated.

Not Loosing/ Or High Expectations
gdub18t replied to realwmnhavcurvs's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
my first visit I was at 381, then lost 20 lb's pre op, and surgery day was at 361, at my 1 week follow up I had lost 23 lb's and was at 338, now tomorrow I'm at my 3 week mark, and have only lost an add'l 5-6 pounds, since then, I did go back to work, start working out 3-4 times a week, and have started some small portions of solids, fish, chicken, egg whites, but nowhere near not being able to lose, 2 meals a day are musclemilk, shakes, and cytomax protein drinks, did I start w/ solids too fast, is this just a temp lull? I have 100 lbs' to go and dont want to think that this is it, I know I'm prolly panicking as it is only the 3 week mark, anyone else experience a slow down in weight loss? -

Explain Pre diet without explaining the sleeve
SParkle replied to mellifrits's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I told people I was on a liquid detox boost diet.. no caffeine/booze etc.... no one really questioned it. They knew I was on a diet anyway (was at WW since November 2009) and I just said I was stalling having had guests etc and a wedding to go to... so this was my way of kickstarting myself again - thus preparing for the long term diet.... I also have up my sleeve (forgive the pun) an excuse of hypnotherapy cds, and a couple of slimming therapy books.... My scars are healing nicely - and I think will fade to virtually nothing. Just take are of them during the healing process. I can also say that at 2 weeks I felt back to normal again with much more energy. Good luck! Kathy -

Did some research...here are concerns
Lynn B replied to CherBee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi, I haven't been revised yet but if you go look at the responses to my previous posts you'll get a lot of answers to these questions. 1. 500 cal??? Maybe in the beginning but not forever. 2. Nope - not recommended with any surgery - its just one of the things you need to accept 3. The part of the stomach left is very muscular and less likely to stretch (unless you really push it) 4. I can't attest to that as I'm not revised yet 5. For some the reduced Ghrelin does suppress appetite 6. hair loss is common after general anesthesia and if you are low on Protein so expect some around 3 months post op (happened with the band to) as long as you keep your protein up though it should grow back and be fine. Good luck! -

Finally got my date; and already want to run!
sixbuttons replied to dlopez978's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm right there! I'm going September 17th - 3 days away! I am absolutely freaking out! I am SCARED to death! I'm so nervous! I keep thinking I'm going to die, or not lose weight, or I'll have serious complications and what will my little boy without me?! It's horrendous! I just keep trying to think that if I don't do it, I'm really not going to have very long with my son. -

I could've wrote this! I don't know how I'm coping, not well really. I have anxiety normally so this is putting it off the charts. I'm scheduled for 10/3 and I'm freaking out. But the more I read here the better I feel. Lots of people have great outcomes and I want that for me too. We will do ok, I figure as long as the pain meds keep my pain manageable and keep my nausea under control I'll be ok. I'm not quite as worried about the eating part after. I just want to survive the surgery. When is your date? -

Ok so I feel like I'm trying to stall the process from fear of failing I guess. I've been researching surgery for over 2 years now and finally took the next step, found a surgeon and a doctor that wants me to have the surgery done. I actually have my psychological evaluation the 14th of this month. I guess I'm just afraid of what's to come. I'm 22 years old and have been overweight my entire life. I have never seem myself skinny or even close to a normal size other than pictures from when I was 2 or 3 years old. I'm excited to have the surgery but I guess since I don't know what to expect I'm fearing the unexpected. Maybe I'm just freaking myself out over nothing but it's a scary thought that 6 months or a year from now I'm going to be a completely different person when I look in the mirror. My family is pretty much split down the middle as support. My dad has been pushing me to do this for a while but my mom is skeptical because she thinks I'm going to change and be a different person all together. It just feels like it's happening so fast. I went to see my new pcp and she wants to try to have everything sent in to have the surgery done by the end of February or early in March. I know this is the best thing for me I'm just freaking myself out and need someone to bring me back down to earth. Lol

Scared My Dr. Not Doing Right Thing
momlambert replied to LadyBlue's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every doctor is different. Some require 4-6 weeks of pre-op diet and others none at all. Some require 2 weeks of liquids (or more) post-op and others a few days. My doctor required no pre-op but then liquids for 2 weeks and mushies for another four weeks--that seemed much longer than most others. My point is, you need to trust your doctor but I think if you want to be more conservative, go ahead! If you would feel better about your post-op diet, just follow the one my doctor required. I think it's fine to err on the side of overdoing it (liquids longer, for instance) but not on the side of doing things before your doctor says to (like eating solids right after surgery). Hope this makes sense! As far as removing saline from the port site, some doctors do fill the bands a little during surgery. I guess in all of this, you just have to trust your doctor while following your own intuition and knowledge. You won't hurt anything by being on liquids and mushies longer than he suggested, so do that if you are more comfortable. -
Newbie looking for support
raggmopp68 replied to Melissa1234's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree, the waiting to finally get the surgery is hard. The day of was no big deal, the 24 hrs following, I felt pretty yucky. I'm 3 days post-op and feeling better each day. Am looking forward to full-liquids tomorrow. Broth just isn't palatable, but I'm thinking creamy chicken soup will be as well as the protein shakes, I really like them...as least I did before surgery. Good luck, and I just keep thinking "Nothing tastes as good as being thin and healthy feels" -

My doctor does the length based on BMI and health history. For instance I was only 2 weeks because I had no health issues, but someone with a BMI of 50 something might have 4 weeks.

You should be fine, get ready to transition into a totally new life. I started my journey Sept 2018 and just had surgery last week. I have had alot of changes in my life and I saw this through all of the pain (my son was murdered this past Jan. ) . I had to finish what he & I started together in his honor and to make sure I'm here for my grandson. I don't want to go into my stuff, I share that to say...Enjoy your journey and take control of your life, don't live in fear, life is extremely unpredictable and short...make your life the best life for you. Grow your locks, continue practicing yoga, be fearless, be positive and ride the waves of your life. Stay present in each moment, take slow deep breaths and keep a journal. This is life changing and you will reas what you wrote a year from now and realize that you are not the same person, but better. Don't stress the approval process time, you have so many other things to enjoy. Save money for your new everything, I promise you will be there transitioning on that surgery table in the blink of an eye. -
Hi! Welcome to the forums! How much weight you will lose in the first week(s) of liquid diet really depends on many things. Did you lose alot of weight already before starting liquids? Are you "full" liquids, or "only" liquids ("full" liquids includes soups, some cereals, yogurts, etc...). Is your starting weight on the high or low side? Are you on your period? Salt-intake? These and so many other factors will affect your weight/water weight loss that first week(s). My pre-op diet was for two weeks and consisted on 3 protein shakes a day (though sometimes I only had 2). Total calories per day for those two weeks were between 450-675 (each protein shake was 225 cals). I lost 8 lbs the first week, then 3 lbs the second. I started at 235, and had not lost any weight prior to starting the 2 week pre-op diet.
