SleeverSk reacted to blackcatsandbaddecisions in learning to let go of old eating habits
I’m a bit over a year out, and I’m firmly in camp carbs are fine. I know there’s no way I can eliminate carbs forever. It’s not the way I want to live my life. I did eliminate candy and pastries/cookies, because I feel like those are a slippery slope for me, but no fruit or potatoes or even sushi and beer just isn’t going to work for me. I exercise a fair amount and I keep my overall calorie count down, but I’m not giving up carbs for life. We go out to a local pizza place on occasion where you can get a slice and a salad. I always eat the salad first and have a few bites of the pizza before I get full. So no, I don’t go crazy like I used to, but I still am having some.

Exactly, which is why the op and many others feel like this. My observations and experience on this journey has lead me to believe to succeed long term with this surgery you need to be the type of person who would succeed with normal diet and exercise programs and if you can do that why would you need surgery. Surgery is a kick start caused by the early after surgery effects where you physically cant eat and your body is forced to survive on a low calorie diet. But once the body heals and you can start bringing in "normal" foods that is where you need will power and commitment and this is where it fails as some of us are lead to believe that the Portion Control side of things is what looses the weight. I have been very surprised by the amount and types of foods i can actually eat ! I feel that perhaps the op may experience the same. Its not the fault of the op for being disappointed and to have feelings of being misinformed. My dietian told me prior to surgery and again after surgery that I could eat as I did pre surgery and loose weight because of the portion control side of things.... false. My surgeon told me AFTER surgery at my 3 month post op appointment that the effects of the sleeve last 18 months to 2 years at the most and what happens after that is entirely up to you. So yes if you look at it like that why are we cutting pieces off a perfectly healthy vital organ for short term benefit. Studies now show that gut health plays a huge roll in weight control among other modern health issues so maybe that is another solution that should be looked at before surgery as I dont even know if we are able to do what it takes to get out gut health right after surgery. That is something i plan to look into.

Ok well consider everything very carefully, its a huge adjustment and if you arent 100% prepared for it , its really really hard to deal with especially when it cant be reversed. Talk to as many people as you can ask lots of questions

Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. For me, the first 9 months or so (after the initial recovery) were great. I was never hungry, and I had a lot of energy even though I was eating very little. But then things started to change. I felt weak and fatigued all the time. My resting heart rate was less than 40 beats per minute, which my surgeon said was probably because my heart was used to having to work much harder when I was carrying 200 extra pounds, and now that I'm so much smaller, my heart has slowed way down to compensate. My surgeon and the cardiologist to whom he referred me said the bradycardia was probably the cause of the weakness and fatigue, so you might want to get that checked out if your resting heart rate has decreased a lot.
Like you, I look much better, but I feel worse than I did before surgery, when I was super morbidly obese. To make matters worse, people keep congratulating me on my weight loss and condescendingly say, "I bet you FEEL better, too!" No, actually, I feel worse than I've ever felt in my life, but hey, at least my body looks socially acceptable now! On the other hand, I was in bad shape before surgery, with hypertension and diabetes that probably would have just kept getting worse if I hadn't lost the weight, and now I no longer have either. It's hard to say whether I'm better or worse off overall than I was before the surgery, but I think it's useless to think about it that way because I made the best decision I could based on what I knew at the time, and there's no going back now.

I've lost 35 lbs since surgery and almost 85 lbs overall. I can walk faster and fit in an airplane seat better, but I don't feel "good." I don't have more energy and I'm hungry all the time and I'm uncomfortable every time I eat. I'm always afraid I'm going to throw up because I'm nauseous a lot. I always had plenty of energy, but now I'm weak and dizzy all the time. I can't even lift a suitcase into the overhead.
I'm sort of wishing I hadn't had this surgery. Maybe because I had such high expectations?

So why have the surgery and not just see a nutritionist and personal trainer then follow their plan? What point does it serve to remove a portion of someone's stomach and then tell them to follow a very strict diet and exercise program to lose weight? If people don't have a problem with diet and exercise they don't need to take drastic measures like surgery.

The worst fatty food i have tried was kfc chicken tenders, didnt have an issue and i didnt have an issue with lollies either or chocolate 😲 or coke or bread 😲😲 which could in the long run be a bad thing. I can have a handful of chips but anymore than that it sit yucky but no foamies or anything. Some of us are lucky in that regard or unlucky as getting thev oamies certainly would be a huge deturant from eating those types of foods

That’s for sure. Me too. I’ve had to work twice as hard since then and progress is slow. If anyone ever tells you that surgery is the easy way out…deck ‘em! (Well, not really, but…)

We were always told a rumbling tummy or hunger pains meant you were hungry - not always true. Like how we had to eat everything on our plate - we don’t. Hunger pains can be caused by too much stomach acid. Do you still take a ppi/esomeprazole? If not give some a try & see if that helps. My tummy makes squelching noises & whines every day. My doctor told me it’s just a signal my body doing what it’s supposed to: digesting food & is nothing to do with hunger.
What do you mean by wanting to feel ‘satisfied’ after eating? Often our old ‘satisfied’ level was a lot of food or until we felt better. Are these old feelings & ways of eating influencing how you feel now? There’s a difference between eating until you’ve had enough & eating until you're full, & whether you need that next bite or just want it. Just throwing some ideas to think about out there. They may not even be helpful to you at all.
Congratulations on your weight loss so far. You’ll be at your goal before you know it. Whoo hoo!

It does get more difficult, because I'm a year out and I have a regular hunger. My stomach growls every 2-3 hours on the dot!, but it's smaller amounts now. It's all about your metabolism. As long as you're feeding your body healthier options throughout the day, you're doing great! I've learned I have to listen to my body, not starve it.

At the end of the day its your choice, i didnt tell anyone because i didnt want negativity to make me change my mind, when i got to the hospital i was scared and basically changed my mind. The nurses and surgeon treated it as pre op nerves. I wish i didnt do it. I am 5 months out still tired, feel unwell most days struggle with what to eat most days but i have lost weight although that has stalled already. I also find myself slipping back into my old habits....so for me I should have tried good old fashion diet because the habits that got me fat arent going to be stopped by the sleeve. Sorry i know you wanted positive encouragement but i think its important to know all possible outcomes. At the end of the day its your choice and you will be anxious about no matter what anyone says. I had no negativity before but i still freaked out. Sorry i am probably not helping i will delete my comment if you want.

So every now and then I experience pain, not bad pain but enough for me to wonder is this normal? It can happen after being active which atm isnt very much as where i live its over 40 degrees Celsius outside and i work 12 hours shifts sitting on my now pancake butt 😐 anyway back to the pain it can be short stabbing or last awhile in my tummy area and some near the incision scars. Could it be scar tissue? Or should i be concerned i also have left shoulder pain but not sure if its an old injury flaring up or referred pain from whatever is going on inside my tummy. Oh and sometimes its a kinda burning pain 🤔

Now I’ve had the foamies a few times in my 2.5yrs from just the hacking cough of something feels stuck & a little saliva to the full regurgitation of whatever I’ve eaten. Each time the foamies related to eating something too coarse, too dry or too fast. Last night the coughing started like something was stuck but I actually hadn’t eaten for hours (8hrs - no lunch no diner - long story). Was understandably hungry so grabbed some chicken when I finally got home. Still coughing. Few minutes later, coughing worsens, salvia starts coming up & then the one bite of chicken I’d had bubbled up. Thing was it wasn’t the chicken, that was just the final straw. I believe the real cause was that I hadn’t really had anything to drink either (same long story). I was way below goal & was likely dehydrated.
Moral is seems you have to stay hydrated to avoid the foamies or the potential foamies too. So we keep learning new things even when we think we’ve a handle on what doesn’t work for us.

I felt blue for a while too! I read somewhere that any anaesthesia carries this risk and couple that with feeling tired, trying to recuperate after major surgery all the while you struggle to drink let alone eat? It’s a perfect cocktail for those feelings to arise. I felt MUCH better a week later, and would really encourage you to reach out to your loved ones so they can support you through this 💕
Be kind to yourself, be proud of yourself! You took a major step that took a lot of courage 💕
