  1. Congrats! That's awesome. You are braver than me. Today is day 8 of my liquid diet and I'm afraid to get on the scale - I don't even have one in the house. If I haven't lost any weight I'm afraid I'll get discouraged. But, I haven't cheated on my diet - not even once!

  2. Mexican Archie Bunker? That's greatness! I am Mexican also but my family has been suprisingly supportive - so, sorry on that end! Of course, when I stopped drinking I did get a lot of crap. Choose your addiction.

The one I am having trouble with is my huband. He acts like he's supportive but in his head I know he hates that I'm doing this. The other day he actually muttered the words "I'm proud of you" but he had a look on his face like he was gonna barf.

So anyway, my point in posting is that it's a big step to realize that you are probably never going to get support from your father. Yes, he is your father and you love him. But he is not a support mechanism and probably never will be. So, you would do yourself well to look for that support elsewhere. Good Luck!

  3. Emily - welcome to the world of liquids! Today is liquid diet day 7 for me and my surgery is also on the 16th! Chocolate sugar free pudding has been a lifesaver for me! I am also chewing LOTS of gum and found awsome popsicles - Dreyers. They have no sugar and are made with real fruit. They're good to eat when the kids are having ice cream! Hang in there!

  4. So, I went out to the lake with my family today. And, thanks to the 20 or so minutes I've been exercising every day I felt like I could almost keep up with the kids! But due to all of the physical activity I got that "real" hungry feeling - you know the one when you've been hiking or camping?

I haven't broken my liquid diet yet - but ARGH, it's getting a bit more dificult. I did my shakes, jello, gum, crunching ice etc and I still have a rumbling hungry tummy. I don't even want anything bad for me - but I'd kill for some tuna & crackers or brocoli with onion dip!

  5. I am so proud of myself. I made it through 4th of July without breaking my liquid diet. I did accidentally lick some BBQ sauce off my fingers when I was serving the kids' food and WOW it tasted good. But I kept to my diet and I'm glad.

It was good not to have that "oh, I ate TOO much" feeling like I usually do on holidays. And, I just kept thinking to myself that next year I wouldn't have to worry about sitting in a folding camping chair and worrying it was going to break!

I hope everyone had a good holiday and got to see some great fireworks!

  6. I agree with Keisha85 - the doctors are there to help you. They know that food is a struggle for us. If it wasn't none of us would have the surgery, right?

I am just on day 2 of my pre-op liquid diet and I know this is going to be hard, but if you give up now then all of your pre-op work will be lost! My sister just had the gastric bypass done and has chosen to look for things to distract her from food - her Nintendo DS, reading, etc. I don't know your exact situation but keeping busy always works for me to help stay away from the food. Lately I've been trying to exercise when I'm bored - like going to the pool or park. Anyway - I hope this helped you some!

  7. I hadn't really thought about this. But it does seem like a big deal. Will my personality change when I am thinner? Maybe it will just be amplified - like with less inhibitions? I have tried not to let my weight hold me back from doing things like camping and the swimming pool. But in the end, it does make a difference. I can't wait to see how/if I change after. Don't know if the world can handle me being any :) wilder - HAHA!

  8. Don't be too upset with yourself! You are exercising and seem to be on top of things. Also, I read (somewhere in my MANY literature pieces) that staying on liquids and mushies for too long can mess up your satiety response (when your stomach tells your brain it's full)!

  9. Patience is not a virtue of mine. But, I agree with ajoneen. If you really want this to happen it will. Don't give up! Just set yourself a reminder to call the doctor's office or insurance every day. Once they see you are really serious they may be more receptive to your requests. I've known too many people that have given up on WLS because of the paper work!

  10. After about 3 months fighting with the insurance company I got my surgery approved ! July 16th!

So today is the first day of my liquid diet and I'm starving! My doc has me on the OptiFast system. So I had one of those shakes after I got settled in at work around 730. Then I had a can of water - 12 oz. Now it's about 1030 and my tummy is grummmbling!

My office is having a 4th of July cookout today so if I have another shake now, then I can't be social and have my "soup" when everyone is eating - argh, decisions decisions.

I'm really scared that I will become anti-social by not eating. I just started really talking to people again and coming out of my shell. Hubby is trying to be supportive but I just :) don't know how long his "support" will last.

It's good to have a place to vent!

  11. Cherie -

I love Wii Fitness! Bowling is my favorite. I hadn't really thought of using it as exercise, but it would be a great way to get my husband more invovled in my exercise. Plus, it's one thing we can do at home, for free and after the baby is asleep.

  12. Ok, so I know that any alcohol is really just empty calories. But, how long should I wait after surgery to drink? My nutritionist recommended straight vodka on ice - funny, huh? I have some friends' birthdays coming up and would love to attend happy hour and have a drink!

  13. I just started my preop liquid diet today. But I know after the surgery I will be on clear liquids for a few days and then on liquids and mushy foods for 2-3 weeks. So you may want to call your doctor or nurse and check with them.

  14. Thank you so much for this post! I fall into many of these traps. I am going to print this out and put it on the fridge or front door or in my car - somewhere to remind me that there are no GOOD excuses.
