Fast Hair loss & Slow Weight Loss
I feel so far behind most of y'all posting on here. I'm only down about 60 lbs from my high, less than 40 lbs post-op. I'm aiming for 100g Protein per day, 900 cal total. And my hair is falling out like crazy, which I would understand if I was dropping weight quickly. I haven't stopped any of my medications yet either. Have your surgeons been sending you in for lab work frequently?

I feel super hungry too, which I didn't expect because the surgeon told me that they were removing the portion of my stomach that made me feel hungry. One of the main reasons I had surgery was so I wouldn't feel hungry all the time. Why is my stomach still growling?

    YES.
I cut it to my jaw at 3 months, then to pixie-boy-short a month later.
soooo much less hair on the bathroom floor, and it looked less sparse on my head!

I'm in the exact same situation. Three months post-op, hair falling out like crazy. My hair is also really long (past my waist) so I'm literally rolling up handfuls of hair into hairballs while I site on the couch watching TV. For those of you who cut your hair, did it make you feel better?

I am no longer morbidly obese! Just plain obese, haha. But not bad, considering that I started with a BMI over 60.

Well everyone I have to tell someone my Non scale victory’s I have had a few this week which helps because I have been stalling again for the past two weeks. So I came across a bag of black jeans that had been bought for my daughter about four years ago ( my daughter hates jeans crazy I know) well they had the tags on and everything. So they are a size 16 and I have never fit into a size 16 in my adult life. To be honest I believe the last time I saw a 16 it was probably when I was 11 years old. Well they fit and they are even a bit baggy and no way tight. I am ecstatic. I also just got taken off my blood pressure medication. Wow I have been on that for fifteen years. Last I was working a part time job today at a hair salon as an assistant and I literally was on my feet working for five hours before my back and hips started to hurt. I have spinal damage and I need two new hips I get cortisone injections in both but today I was feeling wonderful. I have not been at the salon since COVID-19 started. At that time I would have to pop a percent with in 2/12 hrs. Today no pain pill needed. I did take a few Tylenol. This was very exciting for me. Hope everyone is doing great and enjoying the non scale victory’s .

I don't think it is helpful to lecture someone when they have trusted professionals to guide them in their best interests and that trust was broken. In my opinion It is not our place to reprimand only to listen and support. We can't change the decisions we have made to this point but we can learn from them. If someone needs to vent then it seems this is the place to do it. I hear depression and it can be pushed much deeper by blame and shame. Yes, I am new here but have been trained in trauma counseling so I have seen the damage that can be done. From what I hear, It took courage to admit the mistake and not applauding that courage, heightens the chance that the courage won't be found again. I hope you will not shoot the messenger.

locura79 got a reaction from GreenTealael in 2 days post-op and my BP has gone from hypertension stage 2 to normal - is that real?
Prior to surgery, my Omron blood pressure readings were consistently in the "Hypertension Stage 2" category. Yesterday, my BP was down to "Elevated" and today it says "Normal." Is that for real? How can I see such a drastic change when I haven't lost weight yet?

I just had my sleeve yesterday! I'm finding it a little difficult to sleep this first night post-op, but it might be more about the hotel bed than the surgery.

Am I the only one who loves purging my closet? I filled 3 large garbage bags today with all my size 14 & 16 pants, all my XL tops and a good portion of my size L tops, several dresses and a bunch of shoes that are now too big. All donated to a women’s shelter. Started a new bag for my 12’s and the rest of my L tops as I move out of those in to 10’s and M’s. Feels so good!

I am almost 6 months post op and took my first vacation this week (Drove up to Tahoe). I went with some friends who did not know about the surgery but knew I was actively losing weight and trying to eat healthier and it wasn't awkward at all. I didn't snack, but I did eat some meals I shouldn't have. But between watching how much and exercise, I was down just over 2 lbs for the week. In the past, anytime I vacationed I would be up so I'm super excited.
I had some great NSVs while I was out.
    - Hiked almost every day - around 5 miles, intermediate hikes, at elevation. Still hard, but I did it.
    - Kayaked, and was able to get in and out easily.
    - They had standard size bath towels in the bathroom, and it wrapped all the way around me without a gap!
    - It was my birthday and I didn't have any cake, and really didn't miss it.
I tried alcohol for the first time since surgery. I had a glass a wine a couple of times and did fine. However, I had about 1/3 of a margarita and felt awful. I don't think I full on dumped, but I think if I had drunk any more I would have. It's the first time I've had any amount of sugar so lesson learned. I'm going back to not drinking for a while (it will continue to be an occasional event going forward).

If you feel good in your own skin and are healthy at 150 then rock 150 🙂 nobody gets to tell you what weight you should be (except your doctor within reason)

    You're close - 300 - 145 = 155 . 60% of 155 is 93, putting the end weight at 207.
The desired weight is not what is used in this equation though. It is bone and muscle mass. That is determined usually by a special scale at the dr's office. If 145 was the weight of the bone and muscle mass then this equation would be correct.
For example, I weighed 260 at the doctor's at my initial visit - the scale found 130 of that to be bone and muscle and the other 130 to be excess weight. So using the same formula, I'd lose 60% of 130, so 78 lbs, putting my "success" weight at 182.
    Does this help?

I started the journey at 320 pounds and 5'3" - ten years later I am 5'2" (and 64 years old )
Initially my Doctor said I should weigh 140 I laughed. I have never weighed that as an adult. My goal for myself was about 170. My doctor after about 6 months finally told me he agreed with me. That I would (statically speaking) probably lose to about 180 to 175 IF I was able to exercise. I had/still have medical issues that do not make much exercise possible. I lost to 175. Gained 5 back almost immediately. Over the next 8 years gained 40. Last year decided to DO something about it. Have had a slow but steady loss of 3 pounds a month for a YEAR. No drastic dieting, just back to basics.
Have lost 38 pounds. At 175 my BMI will be about 32. Still high, but on the BMI adjusted for age, I will be overweight.
Goals and wants and desires and wishes aside.... be logical. Take YOURSELF into account. You are YOU. Not just a number. Living in your body and how you feel - and not going up and down the scale is what my doc now wants me to do.
    Set realistic goals.

Part of the mental health evaluation of people seeking surgery is whether or not they have a rational and realistic view of what is possible In terms of weight loss with the bariatric surgery. Of course some people lie about that (health care professionals aren’t psychic after all). And the fact is that it is unlikely that people who have WLS will reach their full healthy weight, but will instead lose only a percentage of that (for many, 60%). That’s not my opinion, that is a scientific fact (ask any Bariatric surgeon or expert). When people have expectations that exceed that (and I have seen it many times on WLS boards, patients talking as if they are Joan of Arc determined to defy all odds), But it’s a real problem when people have unrealistic expectations as they can lead to significant disappointment, or depression, and sometimes weight gain.
I don’t understand people thinking they’re surgeons are somehow it gets them, or have a low bar for them, or just know less than WLS patients. I have lost 100 pounds and kept it off for six years (and got a leg injury for the effort) and then regained the weight. I hope this surgery will give me a tool to keep it from happening. And if I get anything remotely close to being normal again I’m going take that and be thrilled beyond words.

One of my first appointments with my doctor, I said I wanted to lose 100. I was currently at 257 at the time. He said he liked that goal. On surgery day, I was 249. I managed to get down to 241, but gained due to covid. I will be happy at 150, 130 tops..nothing lower, I'm 5'5.

My surgeon asked me if I had a goal. I suggested 60kg (BMI of about 23) as I had been that weight before & had been happy then. He agreed & said it was a sensible goal for my height, age & lifestyle. When I surpassed it by 5kg he was initially concerned but after we talked about it he was ok. I lost another 5kg while I was working out my maintenance plan but have been stable for about 4 months.
Personally I think you need to consider what is the weight that will allow you to live the life you want & you can happily maintain. And if your goal changes, that’s your choice. It’s not always about the number on the scales. For me it’s about being happy & healthy.
